Liverpool to Win
Newcastle v Liverpool
Liverpool look well placed to take all three points at St James' Park given Newcastle's ongoing defensive vulnerabilities. While Liverpool's pre-season showed signs of tightening up at the back, their attacking quality still offers a clear route to victory. The away side's ability to control possession and create chances should exploit Newcastle's defensive lapses, making a Liverpool win the most logical outcome. Although a BTTS angle has merit, the cleaner bet here is backing Liverpool outright, especially with the price offering reasonable value ahead of kick-off.
Lecce to Win
Venezia v Lecce
Lecce's edge in this Serie A clash comes down to their slightly better league standing, sitting 15th compared to Venezia's 16th, which adds a layer of urgency for both sides but more so for Venezia. While the match could be affected by rotation and a typically slow tempo, Lecce's motivation to climb the table gives them the sharper route to victory. The odds reflect a competitive but credible chance for Lecce to claim all three points, making their win a logical selection for this acca despite the cautious backdrop.
Both Teams To Score
Santa Clara v Famalicao
Santa Clara depend heavily on Goncalo Paciencia for goals, making their attack somewhat predictable but still effective. Meanwhile, Famalicao's unbeaten away streak and superior shot accuracy suggest they can break down Santa Clara's defence, which concedes over a goal per game. This dynamic sets the stage for both sides to find the net, making the BTTS market a sensible angle given the attacking threats and defensive vulnerabilities on display.
Under 2.5 Goals
Atalanta v Sassuolo
Atalanta's home form last season was marked by a solid defensive setup, with 12 of their 19 home games finishing under 2.5 goals. Sassuolo arrive on the back of a six-match winless run away from home and are hampered by injury absences that blunt their attacking edge. This combination points to a cautious encounter where defensive discipline is likely to keep the scoring low, making Under 2.5 Goals an appealing angle for this Serie A clash.
Four matches on Sunday carry the usual season-opening uncertainty, but each one also contains a specific set of circumstances — squad situations, historical records, defensive patterns and recent form — that makes one outcome harder to argue against than the others. Two Premier League clubs are beginning new eras with new managers and sharply different levels of stability. A newly promoted Serie A side faces opponents they have never beaten at this level. A Primeira Liga encounter could hinge on one man’s goals against a visiting side whose away resilience is more significant than their current points total suggests. And in Bergamo, everything points towards the kind of controlled affair that both teams’ records in this fixture have consistently produced. Four different competitions, four distinct arguments.

Sunday’s Four-Fold Accumulator Selections
Newcastle vs Liverpool
Matthias Jaissle’s summer at Newcastle has been less a rebuilding project than a series of subtractions. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all left, the club finished 12th last season, and Joelinton is now also sidelined with a groin injury before competitive football has even begun. Whoever fills the midfield positions on Sunday could be making their full debut for the club. Lukas Hornicek, another newcomer, is expected in goal. The concentration of change through the centre of the side is substantial, and it arrives ahead of opponents who have not lost a Premier League fixture at St James’ Park in nearly two decades of meetings.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 consecutive Premier League encounters with Newcastle. They have also scored at least twice in six of their last eight visits to Tyneside, which becomes more relevant when set against Newcastle’s own recent defensive pattern. Jaissle’s side have scored and conceded in every one of their seven consecutive Premier League home matches and repeated that sequence across all four summer fixtures. That open match environment, combined with a Liverpool side that produced 20 goals in six pre-season fixtures, creates a clear threat for a Newcastle back four still settling into a new system.
Andoni Iraola arrives having gone unbeaten across an 18-match Premier League run with Bournemouth, though his early Liverpool pre-season was messy — nine goals conceded in four matches including four against Leeds. Two subsequent clean sheets against Como gave his defence a more settled look before Sunday. The sceptic’s point is that clean sheets against Como are not an especially demanding test, and a Newcastle side that has continued scoring in every recent match will not simply stop doing so. Yet the combination of Liverpool’s unbroken record in this fixture and Newcastle’s immediate disruption through the centre of their squad supports the away side clearly enough.
Best bet: Liverpool to Win
Venezia vs Lecce
The historical record in this fixture is unusually one-sided. Venezia have never beaten Lecce in Serie A. The sequence stretches across every meeting at this level, and Sunday represents another opportunity for Lecce to reinforce it against opponents beginning their third top-flight comeback in six years.
Both previous promotions ended in immediate relegation for Venezia, though Giovanni Stroppa’s side set new club records for points, goals and wins in claiming the Serie B title. Akor Adams arrived as the club’s record signing and scored twice against Modena last week, while John Yeboah — 10 goals and nine assists last term — is expected to support him. The squad has been strengthened, but Andrea Adorante, who scored 17 league goals last season, is not due back from injury until October. More significantly, Venezia have won only one competitive Serie A opener in their history, and that result came in 1940. That is a genuinely poor record with which to face opponents they have never beaten at this level.
Lecce’s own case for winning requires some context. Their away record last season was wretched — 11 defeats and only 15 goals from 19 league trips — and they averaged just 0.7 goals per game across the campaign. A Coppa Italia loss to Palermo before this opener does not help the mood, and Lameck Banda is absent amid contract controversy while Medon Berisha’s fitness remains uncertain. New striker Willem Geubbels has been brought in to address a chronically limited attack. The case for Lecce here rests not on their attacking quality but on the weight of evidence against Venezia: a historically poor record in season openers, no previous league victory against today’s visitors, and the measurable advantage that five consecutive seasons at Serie A level provides over a side still adapting to it. Wladimiro Falcone, ever-present between the posts since 2022-23, offers a reliable foundation that Venezia’s reshaping squad currently cannot match.
Best bet: Lecce to Win
Santa Clara vs Famalicao
Goncalo Paciencia has scored all three of Santa Clara’s Primeira Liga goals this season. That level of individual concentration in a team’s attacking output is worth examining carefully before deciding how much it tells us about the hosts’ overall threat. Across their last 10 league matches, Santa Clara average 9.7 attempts and 2.8 shots on target per game, with a scoring return of 1.2 goals. Their 1-0 win over Academico de Viseu last weekend illustrated both sides of that picture: Paciencia’s 14th-minute penalty was enough, but Academico had more attempts and 60% possession. Petit’s side are producing results without generating an overwhelming volume of chances.
Famalicao’s one-point start looks worse than it is. The defeat to Maritimo ended a 13-match league unbeaten run, and Carvalhal’s side have not lost any of their seven most recent away fixtures, recording two wins and five draws. Their attacking statistics across their last 10 league matches show 53.2% possession, 10.7 attempts and 4.0 shots on target per game — all considerably higher than Santa Clara’s figures. Yet both sides average exactly 1.2 goals per match. Famalicao are regularly putting pressure on opposing defences without converting that pressure into a superior scoring return.
That contrast between Famalicao’s shot volume and their goals total is where the two sides’ records intersect most usefully. Santa Clara have conceded 1.2 goals per game over their last 10 matches, allowing 10.2 attempts and 3.3 shots on target per game. A visiting side producing 4.0 shots on target per match will test that defensive record. The clean sheet Santa Clara kept against Academico — despite playing the lesser role — is a genuine risk to this selection, as is Famalicao’s 1-0 win at Estadio de São Miguel in January. But across a broader range of recent evidence, a match in which both sides score is more consistent with what these teams have been producing than one in which either shuts the other out completely.
Best bet: Both Teams To Score YES @ 1/1
Atalanta vs Sassuolo
Thursday’s Conference League draw with Hapoel Tel Aviv told Maurizio Sarri two things in his first competitive match as Atalanta manager. His side kept another clean sheet, reinforcing a defensive pattern that had already produced only 15 home league goals across the entire Serie A campaign last season — a record bettered only by Roma across the division. His side also could not score, which raises the more pressing concern for Sunday: whether the attacking changes under Sarri will translate into enough goals to complement the defensive foundation he has inherited.
Sassuolo begin life under Alberto Aquilani with a 3-0 Coppa Italia win over Cesena providing some positive early evidence, but their travelling league record tells a different story. Six Serie A away matches without a victory — allied to three consecutive defeats to close last season — makes this a considerably more demanding test than the cup game. Ismael Kone is sidelined with a serious injury, Fali Cande and Edoardo Pieragnolo are also unavailable, and both Domenico Berardi and Daniel Boloca are carrying minor injuries. The squad arriving at the Gewiss Stadium could be missing several of its more established players.
Nine of the last 10 meetings between these clubs have produced three goals or fewer, and 12 of Atalanta’s 19 home league fixtures last season finished under 2.5 goals. The complication is last season’s 3-0 Sassuolo win in Bergamo — their first success there in eight previous attempts — which proves this fixture can occasionally produce an unexpectedly open result. Atalanta also face defensive absences of their own, with Isak Hien and Giorgio Scalvini sidelined, while Charles De Ketelaere and Kamaldeen Sulemana are unavailable in attack. Thursday showed that Sarri’s new system keeps clean sheets but has not yet unlocked consistent scoring. Against a Sassuolo side missing key creative options and without an away league win in six, a cautious, low-scoring opener fits both the historical pattern and the current evidence.
Best bet: Under 2.5 Goals @ 23/20
