AFC Championship: Defence First in Denver

The narrative surrounding the AFC Championship shifted dramatically with the injury to Denver quarterback Bo Nix. However, writing off the Broncos solely due to the introduction of backup Jarrett Stidham ignores the fundamental identity of this Denver team. They are the AFC top seeds primarily because of a suffocating defence.

Denver ranks 2nd in yards allowed and concedes just 18.3 points per game. They face a Patriots offence led by Drake Maye, who has shown flashes of brilliance but also vulnerability. Maye has been sacked 10 times in the playoffs and has turned the ball over via interceptions and fumbles. Denver’s pass rush is well-equipped to exploit these protection issues.

The Verdict: While Stidham’s presence suggests Denver will struggle to score freely, their defence keeps them in any game. The 4.5-point handicap is significant in a game likely to be decided by fine margins. Backing the Broncos to cover the spread at home is the smart play.

NFC Championship: The QB Advantage

There are no secrets left between these NFC West rivals. Having played twice already this season, the aggregate score is separated by a single point (Rams 58, Seahawks 57) and a single yard of offence. This is as evenly matched as it gets.

The deciding factor lies under centre. The Rams boast Matthew Stafford, a Super Bowl winner and MVP candidate. Seattle counters with Sam Darnold, who struggled against the Rams earlier this season (sacked nine times in a previous playoff encounter with Minnesota) and managed only 124 passing yards last week. Stafford’s experience in big moments gives Los Angeles a critical edge.

The Verdict: While Seattle has home-field advantage, the 2.5-point handicap for the Rams is appealing given the quarterback disparity. In a game this tight, taking the points with the team possessing the better quarterback is the logical move for the second leg of our double.
