Which football
betting markets actually
win competitions

Picking the right game is half the job. Picking the right market for that game is the other half — and most competition entrants get it wrong. BT4Y markets specialist Laura Simmons has spent three seasons tracking the long-run ROI profile of every major football betting market. Here is what the data actually shows, and what she is building her 2026/27 competition strategy around.

Every major market — rated for competition use

Not all markets are created equal in a long-form tipping competition. Here is the full breakdown — how each market works, its long-run ROI profile, variance characteristics, and whether it belongs in your 2026/27 strategy.

01
🥇
Match Result (1X2)

Home win, draw, or away win — the foundational football market

Long-run ROI potential High
Variance level Medium
Competition suitability Primary
How it works

You predict whether the home team wins, the away team wins, or the match ends in a draw. Three possible outcomes. The most widely bet football market in the world — which means the most analytical resource is pointed at it, and the margins are tight. But it also means the deepest range of odds and the greatest ability to identify value through superior data analysis.

Why it works in competitions

Despite being the most competitive market, 1X2 offers the widest odds range — from short-priced favourites at 1.20 all the way to major upsets at 8.0+. This range matters enormously in competitions. Backing home favourites at odds between 1.70 and 2.40 in well-analysed leagues offers the best balance of strike rate, returns, and variance control across a long season.

✅ Primary market. Build your competition strategy around this first.
Best league application

La Liga and Serie A home wins for mid-to-upper table sides. These markets are structurally underpriced in both leagues relative to the actual home advantage effect. Bundesliga away wins at value odds when fatigue differential is significant. Avoid PL 1X2 where the market is most efficient globally.

02
🥈
Draw No Bet (DNB)

Back a team to win — stake refunded if the game ends level

Long-run ROI potential High
Variance level Low
Competition suitability Primary
How it works

You back a team to win. If they win, you collect as normal. If the game is drawn, your full stake is returned — no profit, no loss. If your team loses, you lose the stake. DNB eliminates one of the three possible losing outcomes from a standard 1X2 bet, making it structurally safer — but at the cost of shorter odds than a straight win bet.

Why it works in competitions

DNB is the most underused market by competition entrants and one of the highest-ROI options available when applied correctly. In games where you are confident a team will not lose but are less certain they will win — or where the draw is a realistic outcome — DNB dramatically improves your mathematical expectation while keeping meaningful return on investment. The variance reduction makes it especially valuable for protecting a positive bank position.

✅ Excellent for protecting mid-season bank position. Massively underused.
Best league application

La Liga and Serie A home sides where draws are structurally common — use DNB instead of a straight home win when the draw probability is above 27%. Bundesliga away sides in top-half vs bottom-half fixtures. Any game where the favourite is priced between 1.50 and 2.00 in a draw-heavy league context.

03
🎯
Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

Back both sides to register at least one goal each

Long-run ROI potential Medium
Variance level Medium
Competition suitability Secondary
How it works

Both teams must score at least one goal each for the bet to win. The result of the match is irrelevant — a 1-1 draw, a 3-1 win for either side, and a 2-2 thriller all win the bet. It loses if either team fails to score. BTTS markets typically price between 1.65 and 2.20, making them moderate-return picks with a relatively binary outcome profile.

Why it works in competitions

BTTS is genuinely useful when you have specific statistical evidence — namely set-piece vulnerability, high attacking xG from both sides, or PPDA profiles that suggest an open game. The mistake most entrants make is backing BTTS based on “both teams can score” feel rather than structural evidence. Without data justification, BTTS at 1.75 is one of the lowest-edge bets in football — the market prices it accurately for average fixtures.

⚠️ Strong with data backing. Weak without it. Secondary market only.
Best league application

Bundesliga top-six games — the highest BTTS rate of any major league at 57%+. Ligue 1 matches involving PSG or Monaco where the opposition’s press creates counter-attack opportunity. Any fixture where set-piece vulnerability data identifies a structural both-scoring tendency in comparable games.

04
🔢
Over / Under Goals

Predict whether total goals will exceed or fall below a threshold

Long-run ROI potential Medium
Variance level Medium
Competition suitability Secondary
How it works

The most common lines are over/under 2.5 goals and over/under 3.5 goals, though lines at 1.5 and 4.5 are also available. Over 2.5 requires three or more goals total. Under 2.5 requires two or fewer. The bet ignores which team scores — only total goals matter. Markets typically price at 1.75–1.95 on either side of the 2.5 line, reflecting near-even probability in an average fixture.

Why it works in competitions

Over/under is at its most powerful when you have PPDA and defensive compactness data pointing clearly in one direction. Under 2.5 goals picks in compact defensive matchups are chronically underpriced in Serie A and La Liga — the market’s default lines assume average goal scoring rates. When both sides play defensively compact systems, the true probability of staying under 2.5 is materially higher than the price suggests. The opposite applies to Bundesliga pressing matchups.

⚠️ Strong with PPDA and compactness data. Weak as a standalone feel pick.
Best league application

Under 2.5 in Serie A compact defensive fixtures involving mid-table sides with low xG-against. Over 2.5 in Bundesliga top-six home games where both sides press aggressively. Under 1.5 in specific La Liga fixtures where one team has already secured a mid-table position and motivation is low — highly specific but regularly underpriced.

05
🌏
Asian Handicap

Level the field with a fractional goal head start or deficit

Long-run ROI potential High (if expert)
Variance level Medium
Competition suitability Advanced only
How it works

Asian Handicap eliminates the draw by giving one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage in goals. A -1 handicap on a team means they need to win by two or more goals for the bet to win. A +0.5 handicap on a team means they win the bet if they win or draw. Quarter-goal handicaps split the stake between two adjacent lines, allowing partial wins and refunds. The system is more mathematically precise than 1X2 but significantly more complex to use correctly.

Why it works in competitions

Asian Handicap offers the best odds for teams you expect to win comfortably — the -0.5 or -1 line on a strong home favourite is often significantly better value than the straight win price. However, it requires genuine expertise in reading handicap lines. Entrants who use Asian Handicap without fully understanding the quarter-ball push mechanics will regularly lose bets they should have won and fail to identify the lines that represent genuine value versus those that trap the uninitiated.

⚠️ High ceiling, high knowledge floor. Do not use unless you know it deeply.
Best league application

Bundesliga top-side home games where the -1 line is available at 1.85+ and xG data strongly supports a multi-goal winning margin. Any fixture where the 1X2 favourite is priced below 1.45 — the Asian Handicap -0.5 line will typically offer materially better value. Only explore this if you have prior experience with handicap line reading.

06
✌️
Double Chance

Cover two of the three 1X2 outcomes in a single bet

Long-run ROI potential Low
Variance level Very low
Competition suitability Avoid
How it works

You choose two of the three 1X2 outcomes — home win or draw, away win or draw, or home win or away win. Covering two outcomes drastically reduces the risk but also compresses the odds, typically to 1.15–1.45 for the most popular combinations. In exchange for greater safety, the return on each unit staked is minimal.

The competition problem

Double chance is structurally incompatible with winning a long-form tipping competition. At odds of 1.20–1.40 per pick, you need an implausibly high strike rate just to generate meaningful profit. The typical double chance odds are priced at the exact margin where the bookmaker’s edge is fully absorbed — meaning the expected value is negative across a large sample. Comfort is expensive in competitions. The bank growth you need to win simply cannot come from markets priced this short.

🚫 Avoid. The maths do not support using this as a competition market at any volume.
The only exception

Home win or draw (1X) in a single very specific context: a top-half home side hosting a bottom-three away team in La Liga, where the draw is the structural worst outcome rather than a likely one. Even then, DNB at better odds is almost always the superior alternative. If you find yourself reaching for double chance, use DNB instead.

07
🎲
Correct Score

Predict the exact final scoreline of the match

Long-run ROI potential Very low
Variance level Extreme
Competition suitability Never
How it works

You predict the exact scoreline at full time. Correct score markets offer high odds — typically 6.0 to 15.0 for common results like 1-0 or 2-1, and up to 150.0+ for unlikely scores. The difficulty is self-evident: even if you correctly predict the winning team, you must also predict the exact number of goals each side scores, which depends on randomness that no model can reliably capture.

Why it destroys competition banks

The correct score market carries one of the highest bookmaker margins in football betting — often 25–30% across the entire scoreline market. This means that even if you identify the correct result, your expected return is significantly negative when measured across a large sample. In a long-form competition, adding large-margin, high-variance bets is the statistical equivalent of donating units to the leaderboard. No professional tipster builds a long-run record on correct score. Neither should you.

🚫 Never. The margins are too high and the variance too extreme for any competition context.
The temptation problem

Correct score is appealing because occasional big wins feel transformative — a 10-0 correct score at 12.0 odds produces the kind of bank jump that looks exciting on a leaderboard. But two wins from 30 attempts at 12.0 is a deeply negative expected value proposition. The highs are memorable. The drain between them is catastrophic. Avoid entirely.

08
Player Props (Goalscorer / Cards)

Back individual players to score, get booked, or hit other milestones

Long-run ROI potential Medium (niche)
Variance level High
Competition suitability Niche / specialist
How it works

Player-specific markets include anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer, to receive a yellow or red card, to have a shot on target, or to score two or more goals. These markets depend on individual performance within a game context, introducing a layer of player-level variance that team-level analysis cannot fully account for — even with detailed data on a player’s form, position, and opponent defensive structure.

When it has value

Player bookings markets — specifically targeting players with high foul rates against opponents known for provoking challenges in midfield — represent the most consistently exploitable player prop in the competition. Referee profile data (bookings per game, aggression tolerance) combined with player foul rates creates genuine edge in cards markets that the market underprices relative to the analytical work available. First goalscorer markets carry too much variance to be reliably profitable.

⚠️ Cards markets can work with referee data. Goalscorer markets: too high variance for the competition format.
Best specific application

Central midfielders with high foul-per-90 rates playing against technically strong opposition in games where an aggressive referee has been assigned. La Liga and Serie A produce the clearest bookings patterns due to more consistent referee assignment behaviour. Stake small (25–40 units) — this is a niche supplementary market, not a primary competition strategy.

The odds, variance and competition fit at a glance

A quick-reference comparison of how each major market sits in terms of typical odds range, result variance, and where it fits — or doesn’t — in a long-form tipping competition strategy.

Market
Typical odds
Variance
Competition fit
Key consideration
Match Result (1X2)
1.40–3.50
Primary
Widest odds range = most opportunity to identify value. Focus on the 1.65–2.40 sweet spot for home sides.
Draw No Bet
1.30–2.40
Primary
Lowest variance of any useful competition market. Best for protecting a positive bank mid-season.
Both Teams to Score
1.65–2.20
Secondary
Good ROI potential with data backing. Without it, the market is efficiently priced and offers no edge.
Over/Under 2.5 Goals
1.70–2.10
Secondary
Under 2.5 in Serie A defensive matchups is the highest-edge specific application. PPDA data is essential.
Asian Handicap
1.80–2.10
Advanced
Better odds than 1X2 for strong favourites — but requires thorough understanding of the line mechanics.
Double Chance
1.15–1.60
Avoid
Odds too short to generate meaningful competition bank growth. DNB is almost always the superior alternative.
Correct Score
6.00–150.0
Never
25–30% bookmaker margin baked in. Extreme variance. Bank-damaging over any competition-length sample.
Player Bookings
2.50–6.00
Niche
Genuine edge available with referee profile data. Stake small — supplement only, never primary strategy.

Laura Simmons joined BettingTips4You in 2022 and has spent three seasons building the most detailed market ROI database in BT4Y’s history — tracking how different markets perform across different game types, leagues, and situational contexts. Her career ROI of 15.2% is built almost entirely on 1X2 and Draw No Bet selections, with occasional forays into Asian Handicap when the line is favourable. She is entering the 2026/27 competition and has agreed to share the market logic behind her approach.

Q
Laura, you said you choose your market before you choose your game. Can you explain what that actually means in practice?
LS
It means I have already decided which markets I operate in before I open a single fixture list. My markets for this competition are 1X2 home wins and Draw No Bet — those two, and nothing else unless something exceptional comes up. I made that decision before the season started based on three seasons of my own ROI data. Once you know which markets you have genuine long-run edge in, you do not need to re-evaluate the question for every game. The market selection is fixed. The game selection is what varies week to week. Most people do it the other way — they find a game they like and then wander through the market list looking for something appealing. That produces inconsistent results because you are operating in different markets with different margin structures and different variance profiles every week. You cannot develop expertise in a market you are only visiting occasionally.
📌 Laura’s markets: 1X2 home wins and Draw No Bet — decided before the season, not game by game
Q
BTTS is hugely popular with competition entrants. Why do you avoid it?
LS
Because the market prices it correctly for average fixtures and I do not have a reliable edge over average. BTTS at 1.75 in a random Premier League mid-table game is priced at roughly its true probability. The bookmaker has modelled it well. For me to have an edge I need the true probability of both teams scoring to be meaningfully higher than the 1.75 price implies — and the only situations where that is consistently true are specific data-driven contexts that I am not confident enough in to stake meaningful units on. Laura’s rule: if I cannot explain in one sentence why this game scores higher BTTS probability than the market price implies, the bet does not happen. Most BTTS bets people place fail that test immediately. They feel like both teams will score. That feeling is not a data point. In my 1X2 and DNB picks, I can almost always articulate the specific reason the market has mispriced the outcome. In BTTS I usually cannot, so I leave it alone.
📌 “If I can’t explain in one sentence why BTTS is underpriced here, I don’t place it.”
Q
When do you switch from a straight 1X2 win to Draw No Bet — what is the trigger?
LS
I have a simple rule: if the implied draw probability from the 1X2 market is above 27%, I use DNB instead of the straight win. A draw probability above 27% means the draw is a genuinely significant outcome in this fixture — one in three or four chance of the game ending level. At that point, the protection DNB gives me is worth the shorter odds. I am not sacrificing return significantly — I am eliminating a 27%+ chance of a neutral outcome turning into a loss. Below 27% draw probability, the straight win is typically the better value because the draw protection costs more in odds compression than the draw risk warrants. It is a mechanical threshold. I do not debate it game by game. The number tells me which market to use and I follow it.
📌 Laura’s trigger: Draw implied probability above 27% → switch from 1X2 to DNB automatically
Q
What is the most common market mistake you see tipsters make in competition formats specifically?
LS
Chasing return through market selection rather than finding edge through game selection. When someone has had a few losing picks, the temptation is to move into higher-odds markets — correct score, first goalscorer, long-shot accas — because the potential return looks like a faster path to recovery. What they are actually doing is compounding the variance problem of a losing run with the structural margin problem of a high-margin market. Correct score carries a 25–30% bookmaker margin. A long-shot acca multiplies that margin across every leg. You are not increasing your chance of recovering the bank — you are mathematically reducing it while telling yourself a story about the big win that changes everything. The market choice during a losing run should move toward lower variance and lower margin, not higher. DNB. Possibly even no pick at all. Never correct score, never an accumulator, never a first goalscorer bet to “make it back quickly.”
📌 “Market selection during a losing run: move toward lower variance, not higher odds.”
Q
What is your specific competition plan — which markets, which leagues, and what is your target by June 2027?
LS
My plan is straightforward. Primary market: 1X2 home wins in Serie A and La Liga, targeting mid-to-upper-half home sides priced between 1.65 and 2.30 against bottom-half visitors. Secondary market: Draw No Bet on the same home sides when the draw probability breaches my 27% threshold — which happens more often than you’d think in those two leagues. I will place four to five picks per week maximum and review which of those two markets is performing better at the end of each month. If DNB is consistently outperforming over a meaningful sample, I will shift the balance. My target is to finish with 14,500–15,500 virtual units. That is a 45–55% return on the starting bank, which I believe will be enough for a top-three finish based on how I have seen similar competitions resolve historically. But my primary focus is the process. The market framework stays fixed. The stake discipline stays fixed. If I follow both through to June, the target takes care of itself.
📌 Laura’s plan: 1X2 home wins (Serie A / La Liga 1.65–2.30) + DNB when draw prob >27%
📈

Laura Simmons’ Market Framework — At a Glance

🎯
Fix your markets before the season

Decide which one or two markets you operate in based on your own historical data. Do not re-open the question each week.

🏠
Primary: 1X2 home wins at 1.65–2.30

Serie A and La Liga only. Mid-to-upper-half home sides hosting bottom-half visitors. Clean motivation context required.

🛡️
Secondary: DNB above 27% draw probability

Mechanical rule — no debate game by game. If draw implied probability exceeds 27%, DNB replaces the straight win.

📉
Losing run: move toward DNB, not higher odds

No correct score, no accumulators, no long shots during a cold run. Lower variance, lower margin — always.

🚫
No BTTS without a one-sentence data reason

Cannot articulate why this specific game is underpriced for BTTS? The bet does not happen. Full stop.

📊
Monthly market performance review

At month-end, compare 1X2 vs DNB ROI. Adjust the balance for the following month if one is materially outperforming.

Build a market identity before you place pick one

The most reliable competition tipsters are not the ones who find the best picks — they are the ones who know exactly which markets they operate in and never deviate from them. Here is how to build yours before August.

📋
Audit your historical picks

If you have any previous betting or tipping record — even informal — go back through it and separate picks by market. Calculate the ROI for each market independently. You will almost certainly find that one or two markets account for the majority of your positive results and the rest are flat or negative. That concentration is not a coincidence. It is where your knowledge and instincts are genuinely aligned with the data. Build your competition approach around those markets exclusively.

Step 1 — Before the competition starts
✂️
Cut everything outside your two best markets

Once you have identified your top one or two markets, write them down as your competition markets and treat everything else as off-limits. This is harder than it sounds. There will be games that seem perfectly suited to a BTTS pick when your markets are 1X2 and DNB. There will be weeks where correct score odds look irresistible. The discipline is in acknowledging the temptation and walking away. Market discipline is a skill built by saying no consistently — not by always finding a reason to say yes.

Step 2 — Write it down and commit
🔢
Learn the margin structure of your chosen markets

Every market has a built-in bookmaker margin. Knowing the typical margin for your market helps you identify when the market is pricing something more generously than usual — which is exactly when value exists. The 1X2 market typically carries 4–7% total margin split across three outcomes. DNB typically carries 3–5%. When a 1X2 home win shows at 2.20 and your analysis suggests true probability of 55%, the margin maths tell you that pick is genuinely underpriced. You cannot know that without understanding the margin structure of the market you are in.

Step 3 — Understand the maths of your market
📅
Review market performance monthly — not weekly

Week-to-week market performance is too noisy to draw conclusions from. Monthly reviews give you a meaningful sample — typically 15–25 picks per market across a calendar month — that tells you whether the market is performing as expected or whether something in your selection process needs adjustment. If a market shows negative ROI over two consecutive months with a sample of 20+ picks, that is a signal worth investigating. One bad month is noise. Two consecutive bad months with a decent sample is a pattern. Monthly cadence keeps you responsive without being reactive.

Step 4 — Monthly review, not weekly

Which market to use — a decision guide

Once you have identified a game worth betting, use this guide to confirm which market is the right one for that specific fixture context. Run through it before every pick.

📊 Market selection decision guide
The game is a clear home favourite with clean context and the draw implied probability is below 25%
1X2 Home Win
The game is a home favourite you back to win but the draw probability is 27% or above
Draw No Bet
Both sides have high PPDA (press aggressively), or set-piece data shows structural both-scoring tendency in this matchup
BTTS
Both teams are compact, low PPDA, xG-against below 1.0 per game — defensive game strongly indicated
Under 2.5 Goals
Strong home favourite priced below 1.50 and you want better odds — you are familiar with handicap mechanics
AH –0.5 or –1
High foul-rate midfielder playing against technical opposition with an aggressive referee assigned — referee data confirms above-average bookings profile
