Daniil Medvedev is back in action, and this is what is making the headlines in Geneva this week. After recovering from surgery, the world number two will play his first tournament since Miami. Clay is not his surface, and considering his form won’t be particularly brilliant, there is little value in backing him. The favourite, and rightly so, is Casper Ruud, who started his European clay season rather disappointingly but looked to have found form just at the right time, by reaching the semi-finals in Rome, just to concede defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Normally we would stay away from top 10s players this week, with the Roland Garros starting next Sunday, but, given that Ruud has suffered some unexpected defeats since returning to Europe, we expect he will be keen to get more matches under his belt before heading to Paris. He has a first-round bye here, so overall he will only play four matches if he goes all the way and makes appeals. Furthermore, the Norwegian has been placed in the weaker half of the draw to avoid Medvedev and Shapovalov. Casper Ruud won this tournament last year, and we believe he has what it takes to defend his title.

The ATP Lyon looks relatively open this week, with several players that can potentially go all the way. After finishing second in Barcelona last month, Pablo Carreno Busta is the current favourite. He has been in decent form but has also lost several tight matches this season, and there isn’t just enough value to justify this price. Better to look at other options, like Federico Coria, a clay specialist who can have a positive run here.

On this surface, the Argentine has reached two quarter-finals in February in South America and has also made the last four in Marrakech. The Maroccan venue is known for its altitude, and with Lyon, which is at 250m above sea level, there is a slight advantage for these players that like the balls to fly a bit.
