📅 Published: 19 March 2026  |  📊 Data: Feb–Mar 2026  |  👥 Sample: 2,500 UK Adults

It is the ultimate test of modern romance: can love survive the local derby? According to new research from the BT4Y Data Lab, the answer is a resounding “no.”

A new national dating survey of 2,500 UK adults reveals that football tribalism is officially dictating the country’s dating apps. From instant “icks” to outright dealbreakers, our data exposes which Premier League fanbases are considered marriage material, which are the most “dumpable,” and the regions where dating a rival is strictly forbidden.

In short: The wrong football shirt in a dating profile is an immediate left swipe for millions of Brits.

⚡ The Shock Stats (Topline Results)

68%

The Ultimate Dealbreaker

Admit they would rather date someone who hates sports entirely than date a supporter of their fiercest rival.

35%

Politics vs. The Premier League

Say it is more important to support the same football team than to share the same political beliefs.

28%

The “Plastic” Partner

Admit they have actively faked an interest in a specific football team just to impress a date.

“In the UK, football isn’t just a weekend hobby; it’s a core identity. We are a nation that would rather sit in silence with a partner who hates football than share a sofa with a rival fan.”
— Gram Dodd, Senior Editor, BT4Y Data Lab

💔 Dateable or Dumpable: The Premier League Fan Rankings

We asked respondents to rank the fanbases of major UK clubs based on their dating appeal, loyalty, and “red flags.” Here is how the fans fared:

  1. Manchester United
  2. Tottenham Hotspur
  3. Leeds United

💍 Marriage Material

Fans of clubs known for enduring hardship with unwavering loyalty topped the “commitment” index.

  1. Newcastle United
  2. Everton

📍 The Derby Divide: Where is Rival Romance Forbidden?

While some fans can compromise, certain UK cities treat cross-club dating as an act of treason. Here is the percentage of fans who say dating their local rival is a strict dealbreaker.

1. The Old Firm (Celtic vs Rangers) 82% Dealbreaker
2. North London Derby (Arsenal vs Spurs) 65% Dealbreaker
