Defensa Y Justicia to win
Defensa Y Justicia v Independiente
Reason for tip

Defensa Y Justicia’s recent form and home advantage set the stage for a likely victory over Independiente. They boast a sharper attack, averaging nearly two goals per game recently, while maintaining a solid defence that concedes less than one goal on average. Independiente’s struggles in front of goal and higher concession rate suggest they’ll find it tough to contain their hosts. The market odds of 2.2 for a Defensa win appear to undervalue their consistent performances and tactical discipline, making this a value-backed selection with a credible route to victory.

Saturday’s football stretches across three continents, with four fixtures raising very different questions about form, momentum and what recent evidence actually tells us. One side’s defensive numbers have been quietly impressive; another outfit is producing historically remarkable points returns; a goals angle makes more sense than a straight winner in a fixture that has something to say about both attacks; and in South America, a striker who cannot stop scoring faces visitors whose results have been persistently low-key. Four selections, four different arguments — none of them built on reputation alone.

Defensa y Justicia vs Independiente

Defensa y Justicia arrive at this one with a defensive record worth taking seriously. In their last six matches, they have conceded just four goals in total — a run that indicates a team well-organised at the back, even if those numbers do not necessarily explain why. Their most recent outing, a 2-1 win over Talleres, was hardly comfortable: they trailed early and needed a late goal to settle it. But winning from a position of difficulty is its own kind of evidence.

The case is sharpened considerably by what Independiente bring to this game. The visitors have been scored against in five of their last six matches, with opponents finding the net eight times across that run. In their most recent defeat, to Boca Juniors, Independiente managed 23 attempts on goal but only five of those required the goalkeeper to act. That kind of mismatch between volume and accuracy is the sort of thing that tends to persist rather than correct itself overnight. A side that cannot convert chances against struggling opponents will find it harder still against a defence that has been difficult to score past.

The counterpoint is real enough. The most recent head-to-head meeting, played in April this year, ended 3-1 to Independiente — a match in which Defensa managed one shot on target from nine attempts. Across their wider head-to-head history, the clubs are essentially level: two wins each and two draws in six meetings, averaging 1.67 goals per game. Nothing in that record points to routine home wins. Still, form pictures shift, and right now the match-up between Defensa’s defensive solidity and Independiente’s inability to convert possession into goals provides a reasonable basis for the home selection.

Best bet: Defensa Y Justicia to win

AC Milan vs Inter Milan

The number that contextualises Saturday’s derby most clearly is this: Inter have accumulated 25 points from their opening ten Serie A matches, their best return at this stage of any campaign in the 21st century. That is not a record assembled through fortunate results or opponents’ misfortune — Cristian Chivu’s side have won six of their eight league matches, and came from behind for the fifth time in eight games when they beat Fiorentina last weekend before reclaiming top spot in midweek. The resilience involved in repeatedly winning games they haven’t led is a specific kind of strength.

What makes this selection more straightforward than the San Siro setting might imply is the state in which Milan arrive. A 4-2 home defeat to Bologna on Wednesday — the first time in almost four years they have shipped four at their own ground — is a difficult way to approach their biggest domestic fixture of the campaign. Ruben Amorim’s rebuild remains a work in progress: Milan sit fifth in Serie A and have taken only three points from three Europa League matches. Inter, by contrast, have dropped just two points all season in the league.

The honest counterpoint is Inter’s injury list. Lautaro Martinez, their captain and leading goalscorer, remains sidelined, and Marcus Thuram and Ange Bonny both missed chances in what was described as a jaded display against Venezia. Milan’s recent derby form before November’s defeat also deserves acknowledgement — they had gone five wins from seven in the fixture, including two consecutive 1-0 league wins. And Alphadjo Cissé, who scored a hat-trick in the Europa League earlier this term and added a brace in midweek, gives Milan a genuine attacking threat. But a side with 25 points and a coaching setup that won both domestic trophies last season faces opponents who have just conceded four at home for the first time in years. The direction of travel between these clubs currently points one way.

Best bet: Inter to win

Barcelona vs Alaves

Barcelona have scored 40 goals in La Liga this season. That figure is the natural starting point for most discussions about their matches, but the selection here is not simply the home side to win — it is for both teams to score. The reasoning requires a look at what Alaves actually carry into this fixture.

Lucas Boye has scored five times in nine league appearances for Alaves, while Mariano Díaz — a former Real Madrid forward — has contributed three goals and four assists in ten matches this season. Those are not the numbers of a side incapable of threatening any defence they face. And Barcelona have conceded 11 goals in La Liga, which happens to be the same total as Alaves themselves. The defensive picture, in other words, is not entirely one-directional.

What adds weight to the BTTS angle is Barcelona’s recent form. Back-to-back defeats — 4-2 to PSG in the Champions League and 2-1 to Real Madrid last weekend — have introduced questions about a side that had won their opening eleven league matches. They remain top and retain a 40-goal attack, but the last fortnight suggests they are not watertight at present, even at home. The concern for this market is Alaves’s run: winless in six La Liga matches, with their last victory coming in a 5-2 win over Osasuna in September. Teams in that kind of run can go quiet at Camp Nou. Still, a visiting attack led by Boye and Díaz, facing a Barcelona side that has shipped 11 league goals and is navigating the nerves that follow consecutive defeats, provides a credible path to goals at both ends.

Best bet: BTTS Yes

Velez Sarsfield vs San Lorenzo

Ronaldo Martínez has scored in seven of his last nine matches for Vélez, with nine goals across his last seven appearances. His hat-trick in the 5-0 away win over Central Córdoba last Sunday — his first for the club, including an overhead kick — took him to ten goals in the Torneo Clausura, level with the league’s next-best striker. A player in that kind of form, hosting opponents who have averaged 0.6 goals per game across their last five matches, is the central reason this selection exists.

The home context strengthens the case. Vélez have avoided conceding first at the Estadio José Amalfitani in 20 of their last 22 matches, a pattern that indicates opponents rarely get any early momentum at this ground. San Lorenzo drew 0-0 with Newell’s Old Boys most recently, and their last five results have brought two wins, one draw and two defeats. Their overall league record of 10 wins, 11 draws and 10 defeats reflects a side more in the middle of the table than their current ninth position implies, and their scoring average of 0.7 goals per game across the league season makes them an awkward proposition to back to find the net freely.

The counterpoint worth examining is the head-to-head record. The most recent meeting between these clubs, in April this year, finished goalless. Across the wider head-to-head history, Vélez have averaged just 0.8 goals scored and 0.4 conceded against San Lorenzo — modest figures for a side currently dismantling opponents elsewhere. San Lorenzo also have ten league wins this season, so there is quality there. But Martínez’s sustained form, combined with Vélez’s home record of not conceding first and visitors who have consistently been involved in low-scoring results, makes the case for the home side a considered one rather than simply one of reputation.

Best bet: Velez Sarsfield to win
