Jukebox King
14:50 Wincanton — Jukebox King
The Bridles Care Home In Wincanton Handicap Hurdle is a Class 4 contest over two miles and five furlongs where the ground is currently Good. In a field where several of the older runners appear to have reached their peak, Jukebox King is the one with significant room for improvement. This six-year-old gelding made a very encouraging handicap debut at Warwick recently, finishing a solid fourth over a similar trip. That experience is crucial; it teaches a horse how to travel in a competitive pack and find a rhythm when the pace quickens.
A "handicap" is designed to give every horse an equal chance by assigning weights based on their past performances, and Jukebox King lines up here off a mark of 109. This looks a lenient starting point for a horse that has finished fourth in his last three starts, showing a level of consistency that many of his rivals lack. While he has yet to win on Good ground, his physical stature and the way he finishes his races mean the conditions at Wincanton will suit him perfectly. The opposition has plenty to prove. Gold Link has experience but is hard to predict, while Jena d'Oudairies has a habit of fading in the closing stages of her races. Jukebox King, by contrast, is an unexposed type—a term used for a horse that hasn't fully revealed the extent of its talent to the handicapper yet. With Tom Bellamy in the plate, a jockey operating at a 33% strike rate over the last fortnight, the intent from the Kim Bailey yard is unmistakable. He has the strongest case for progression in this field.
Ocean's Breath
18:45 Dundalk (AW) — Ocean's Breath
Moving over to the Irish coast for the evening's all-weather action, the six-furlong Dundalk Stadium Open All Summer Maiden looks tailored for Ocean's Breath. This three-year-old colt, trained by the expert sprint handler G M Lyons, is comfortably the best horse in this race based on his juvenile form. Last October at Navan, he showed immense speed to finish second and fourth in two high-quality maidens. A "maiden" is a race restricted to horses that have never won before, and Ocean's Breath has already proven he belongs in a much higher grade than this.
His last run saw him finish as a beaten odds-on favourite, but that occurred on soft turf which clearly blunted his natural acceleration. The "Polytrack" surface at Dundalk is a synthetic, all-weather track that provides a much more consistent and faster footing. This change in surface means Ocean's Breath can use his high cruising speed to put the race to bed early. His rating of 91 puts him a staggering 15lbs clear of his nearest rated rival, Allsortz, which is a massive advantage in a sprint. Colin Keane, a jockey who knows every inch of this track, takes the ride. While newcomers like Green Amoro have attractive pedigrees, they lack the "race-fitness" and experience of the selection. Falcon Queen showed speed on her debut but lacked the stamina to finish, whereas Ocean's Breath has already battled in tough finishes. He is the class act of the race and should prove far too sharp for these over the six-furlong trip.
Moment Of Light
19:30 Kempton (AW) — Moment Of Light
The finale of the treble takes place at Kempton Park in the Virgin Bet Daily Price Boosts Handicap over one mile and three furlongs. In a small field of five runners, tactical positioning and course familiarity are everything. Moment Of Light is the only horse in the line-up to have won over this course and distance, a feat he achieved just 35 days ago. That victory was a dominant display of stamina and speed on a Standard to Slow surface, and he returns here in the form of his life. Trained by James Owen, who has enjoyed a 13% strike rate recently, Moment Of Light is a horse that has clearly found his niche on the all-weather. He carries 9st 7lb and is rated 78, a mark that still looks well within his capabilities given how easily he handled the Kempton turns last time out. The "Standard to Slow" going refers to the depth and speed of the track; horses that can maintain a steady gallop without getting bogged down excel here, and Moment Of Light is exactly that type of performer.
His main rival, Parisian Scholar, was a runner-up recently but has failed to win in two previous attempts at this venue. Starship Trooper and Devil's Peak are both talented but return from varying lengths of absence, which gives the race-fit Moment Of Light a distinct physical edge. Luke Morris, widely regarded as one of the finest all-weather jockeys in the country, takes the ride from stall one. This "inside draw" allows him to dictate the pace or sit just behind the leaders while saving ground on every bend. This combination of recent winning form and perfect track conditions makes him the final piece of the puzzle.
