Main Bet: Russell Henley
Without any doubt, the WGC Dell Match Play is the most difficult of the PGA Tour schedule events. It is interesting to note that since this event was moved to Austin Country Club in Texas, we have had two of the four winners that were just coming off a win. So recent form has to be taken into account carefully when looking at this market. We believe there is good value in backing Russell Henley this week, and this is our main bet.
The 50th seed is back from a top-three finish in the Honda Classic where he started with 64 and ended with 68. He also ranked first for Strokes Gained: Putting at PGA National last week and won here in Texas in the past as he prevailed in the 2017 Houston Open. He has played this course before, and even if he hasn’t been particularly impressive, he did fine: he won only one of the three matches, but the margins against Paul Casey and Kyle Stanley were close.
He has been added to a rather easy group with Sungjae Im, Marc Leishman and Victor Perez, and we do expect him to go through, and at this price, he is surely worth a shot.

Each Way Bet: Brian Harman
Our each-way selection is Brian Harman, who had a great week at TPC Sawgrass, where he played very well and eventually finished tied third in The Players Championship. A couple of metrics were particularly interesting in his performance.
The first is the putter, who was hot. He ranked 1st in SG: Putting, and similarly to what we said for Henry, the good confidence on the greens could make him a protagonist here. Secondly, he has the type of play that should fit well for match play, and in addition to that, he has fared well in the 2018 edition, on his debut in this event.
He started quite slowly in that tournament but then defeated Peter Uihlein and trashed an in-form Rory McIlroy. He then progressed into the knockout stage, where he lost to Bubba Watson, who then went on to win the tournament.
Surely his price looks very big for this week, and the reason is that he has a difficult draw to overcome. Harman, the 54th seed, has been placed in Group 10 with Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, and Carlos Ortiz. If he managed to progress, he would potentially find in the last 16 one between Patrick Reed, Bubba or Christian Bezuidenhout. Surely not easy, but let’s not forget that he has already outscored them all at TPC Sawgrass, so he could be the dark horse of this event.
