Steve Ryder previews the whole card at York on the first day of their festival and has a tip on the AW at Kempton in the evening. P&L -8.29pts
1:55 Thesme 11/1 (1pt ew)
York is a course where surprising results can occur and previous form at the track is important. Thesme’s course form is 11335 with her last start at the venue a fantastic 5th place finish in the Group 1 Nunthorpe stakes at 66/1. She was raised to a handicap mark of 109 after that run and after a couple of quiet prep runs this season she is now back down to a mark of 100. That is a mark that is definitely within her reach after placing off a mark of 96 last season. Frankie Dettori has been booked for the ride and she is drawn low which is an advantage on the straight course. Thesme looks a solid each way bet in an open race to kick off the festival where Paddy Power are offering an extra place.
2:25 Wells Farhh Go 16/1 ew
Wells Farhh Go was really impressive when winning a C&D maiden last month and although this is a step up in class, he may prove up to it. I tipped the second placed horse in that race, Laugh A Minute, and given that he is held in high regard by Roger Varian, it may turn out that the form of the race is very strong. Given he has course form and is in a field where the majority only having novice/maiden form, a chance is taken at a big price that Wells Farhh Go can at least hit the frame.
3:00 Cracksman 10/11 (1pt)
Cracksman has the best form on offer and is the highest rated in this field. He was inexperienced when placing in the Epsom Derby before an improved effort to finish second in the Irish Derby at the Curragh. He was forced wide into the straight and Capri managed to get first run on him before fighting out a close finish. The nearest horses in the ratings to him all finished behind him at Epsom and Mirage Dancer will have to improve from his Hampton Court run at Royal Ascot to trouble the favourite here.
3:35 Ulysses 7/2
Ulysses has been very solid this season, winning a Group 3 on his reappearance before a 3rd in the Prince of Wales Stakes. He then won the Coral Eclipse at Sandown beating Barney Roy by a nose before a fantastic 2nd behind Enable in the King George last time. He has travelled really well in his last two runs so the drop back to 1m2f will suit him and he still looks to be improving. I was really keen on Churchill for the Sussex Stakes but I am not convinced that a step up in trip will suit him, Barney Roy was beaten by Ulysses last time but is a shorter price than him and Cliffs of Moher has about 5 lengths to find on the selection albeit after being hampered last time. Ulysses has fewer questions to answer than most in the line up so a chance is taken on him in a fascinating race.
4:15 Shrewd 12/1 ew
Shrewd was placed in the Ebor Handicap last season but is number 33 on the list for the race this year so he would be very unlikely to get into that race and therefore runs in this race instead. His second place last season was off a mark of 100 (with a 7lb claimer on) and he runs in this race off a mark of 98 (again with a 7lb claimer on) so he should have a chance off this mark. Ian Jardine is in good form with his horses 5/25 (20% strike rate) so a chance is taken on him at a double figure price with 5 places on offer with Skybet.
4:50 Green Fortune 13/2 (1pt ew)
Green Fortune is trained by William Haggas who has a fantastic record at York. He is operating at a 34% strike rate over the last 12 months with 11 wins and 20 places from 32 runners. Green Fortune has won twice from three runs so far and was impressive last time at Chelmsford in a novice race. The form of his runs have been working out well with multiple winners coming from every race he has contested so far. He improved for the application of cheekpieces last time and if he is in the same form this time he should have a big each way chance with 6 places on offer on Skybet in this race.
7:15 Kempton- Phalaborwa 4/1 (1pt ew)
Phalaborwa won for us last time at 8/1 at Lingfield, meaning that she is now 2/2 on the AW. She has been raised 7lb for that victory but she appears to have conditions in her favour again. She made all to win at Kempton and tracked the leader in second at Lingfield last time before taking over in the straight. She looks to be the only front runner in the line up so she should be able to get to the front from her wide draw of Stall 10. Ed Vaughan has had 2 winners from his 6 runners in the last two weeks including a handicap winner yesterday, and hopefully Phalaborwa can improve his recent form with victory in this race.
