Following an evens (5pt) winner yesterday, I preview three races on Wednesday 17th January. Jan P&L +12.10pts.
1:20 Newbury- Doitforthevillage 7/2 (1pt) WH
Doitforthevillage is chucked in on handicap ratings running over hurdles off a mark of 113 compared to a mark of 139 over fences. He is 0-5 over hurdles but has a good strike rate over fences with 6 wins from 14 runs. Even if he does prove to be a better chaser than hurdler, the fact he can run off a mark 22lb lower means he is worth chancing at 7/2.
2:25 Newbury- War Sound 9/2 (1pt)
I think it is worth taking the chance on the outsider of the field, War Sound, in this four horse race. This is a Novices’ Handicap Chase and he interestingly receives weight from all of his rivals despite being rated the highest over hurdles. He has raced three times over fences this season behind graded performers of River Wylde, Brain Power and Rather Be finishing 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in small fields. Philip Hobbs was in poor form before Christmas but his stable are in much better form now with a current 33% strike rate. Based on ratings and stable form, I can’t believe he is the outsider of four and a chance is taken at 9/2.
3:20 Lingfield- Spare Parts 13/8 (1pt)
I opposed Spare Parts with Mercury at Chelmford last time but that proved foolish as he won his second race in as many days. The two pulled 7 lengths clear at the finish and I was really impressed with both horses in the race. That completed the hattrick for Spare Parts but as a result he has gone up from a mark of 49 up to running off 69 in this race. He looks really progressive though and looks one to keep onside until the handicapper catches up.
