Following a poor day yesterday, Steve Ryder previews three races at York on Wednesday 15th May. P&L +56.71pts.
1:50 York- Corgi 9/1 (0.5pt ew)
Corgi ran consistently well on all starts last season and could be overlooked in the market for horses who have a sexier profile. He progressed from winning at Sandown off a mark of 85 to finishing second in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot where he finished in front of the likes of Cross Counter and First Eleven with the latter reopposing on worse terms here.
Corgi followed that effort with a 2nd at Goodwood off a mark of 94 and a close up 6th off 96 at this venue but with a gelding operation and wind operation over the summer hopefully some improvement can be made. He is available to back each way with five places and should be involved in the finish.
3:00 York- Limato 13/2 (2pt ew)
Limato has a fantastic record over 6f of 11111210320119 and it seems connections have finally given up trying to make him into a miler. He needs good ground or faster which he gets here and also has good form at this track with a second place in a Nunthorpe and a C&D win last season. His reappearance record is distorted by the fact most of his reappearances have come in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over a mile but he did win a Group 3 on his reappearance at 3 and also won off 56 and 73 day breaks over the last couple of years.
Despite having to concede a penalty for his Group 2 success last season, Limato looks to have lots in his favour and I will be disappointed if he was beaten.
4:05 York- Chairmanoftheboard 50/1 (0.5pt ew)
Chairmanoftheboard was well backed and made an impressive debut at Goodwood last season when he won by 8 lengths. At the time he had an Irish 2000 Guineas entry and Mick Channon compared him favourably to his St James’ Palace winner Zafeen. Things haven’t gone to plan since and the trainer has reported that he has had a few problems but he now makes his handicap debut off a mark of only 90.
With a first time visor fitted today and with five places available each way, Chairmanoftheboard looks worth backing at huge odds.
