The Vertem Futurity Trophy takes place in late October at Doncaster, and it is a Group One Status race. It is one of the most important horse races for two-year-olds in the UK that has delivered several top winners over the years. Lots of them have gone on to bigger things as three years old.
The race was firstly established in 1961 under the name of Timeform Gold Cup, but took the name as the Observer Gold Cup between 1965 and 1976. It was promoted as Group One race in 1971 and has been sponsored by the Racing Post since 1989. It recently changed sponsorship to Vertem Futurity.
The race is run over one mile and it is the last Group One of the British flat racing season. Four winners of this race have gone on to win the Epsom Derby. The best trainer of the Vertem Futurity Trophy is Henry Cecil who has won this competition ten times. It is not uncommon for the leading runners to enter the Classics like the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. Compare the odds on the Vertem Futurity Trophy below.
