Main Bet: Viktor Hovland To Win

The US Open is once again upon us, this time whisking us off to the wild West for some night-owl golf viewing for the fans back in the UK. That’s right – Pacific Time is the clock we’re on, which means an eight-hour time lag and golf playing into the wee hours.

The Alluring Los Angeles Country Club

Your sleep sacrifice should pay off as we step into the unfamiliar territory of The Los Angeles Country Club, a par-70 course stretching out to 7,423 yards. While the sheer length might seem daunting, the upcoming hot weather and hard, speedy conditions suggest that those who can’t hit quite as far may also stand a chance.

The hand behind the course’s design is none other than George Thomas, famed for creating LA’s regular PGA Tour location at Riviera. But it would be a mistake to think that a good performance at the Genesis Invitational would necessarily translate here, even though both are parkland courses within seven miles of each other.

Course Features and Players’ Insight

The Los Angeles Country Club is a maverick in this part of the States, boasting Bermuda rough along the fairways and Bentgrass greens, unlike Riviera’s Kikuya and Poa Annua grass types. The course’s unusual configuration for a Majors track includes five par 3s and three par 5s, providing more room off the tee.

The course will be a first-time experience for many of the professionals, but it’s worth noting the familiarity of Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa from the 2017 Walker Cup. Max Homa, who holds the course record of 61, mentions that “LACC is a second shot golf course” and could be played “along the ground a lot if you wanted to.” For Adam Scott, it’s all about the iron control.

Defending US Open champion, Matt Fitzpatrick, offers more insight: “The big thing at LACC is around the greens. It looks like you can’t miss them. I think it’s going to be really difficult to make up and downs. You’ve got to be really strong tee to green.”

Viktor Hovland: A Rising Star

In light of all this, one name stands out – Viktor Hovland. Having won the recent Memorial Tournament where similar “firm” and “fast” conditions prevailed, Hovland is making quite the name for himself in the Majors. His performances in the US Masters and US PGA are a testament to his emerging presence in the game.

Hovland’s improvement in his short game, particularly Around The Green (ATG), has been noteworthy. From ranking almost last in this category last season, he has made significant strides this year and has consistently gained strokes on the field in the ATG category in his last four Majors.

Hovland’s dominance in Strokes Gained: Approach (SG: Approach), an important stat for this week’s course, has also been impressive. He was the best in this category in the US PGA, gaining over 10 strokes on the field.

The Hovland Advantage

The Norwegian’s exceptional performances in Florida, where Bermuda grass is prevalent, could give him an edge this week. Add to that his excellent track record in California and his three wins in five starts back in 2021/2022, and it seems Hovland’s moment to shine might be right around the corner.

So, as we prepare for some late-night golf excitement, it might be worth paying close attention to Viktor Hovland. This rising star is showing all the signs of a winner, and this US Open might just be his time to shine.
