The main debate in the build-up to Augusta this year is how the course will influence playing compared to last November when Dustin Johnson broke the 72-hole scoring record by going 20-under. Looking at the data, we have had seven of the top finishers in November that posted a previous top five at this course. So, the results last year weren’t shocking, and it is likely the timing only played a minor effect.

Main Bet: Daniel Berger

We do expect scoring to be a lot higher this time, and this is also documented on the history books. After all, the folk at Augusta National are not keen to see the course taken apart as Justin did, and we do expect the winning score to come right down. Both Jordan Spieth and Lee Westwood have said the course is the hardest he had ever seen it.

If it wasn’t for the ‘father to be’ distraction, we would have gone for Jon Rahm, but winning a Master while being ready to pack is not the best way to focus. At roughly three times the price of Rahm, my tip is Daniel Berger.

Berger discovered how difficult Augusta National is when making his debut in the 2016 edition. Despite that, he did very well and finished tied 10th after two-under-par rounds during the weekend. He confirmed himself in the next two years with a 27th in 2017 and tied 32nd in 2018. Later in 2018, Berger also fired a Saturday 66, which took him to be the co-leader after 54 holes of the US Open.

Eventually, he finished sixth, but surely there are great signs he can do well here. Let’s think Shane Lowry, for instance. He was the 54-hole leader back in the 2016 US Open and then won the Open Championship three years after. Berger could be on the exact same path.

He has won at the Charles Schwab Challenger in June 2020 and also at Pebble Beach in 2021. The 27-year old was also second halfway and seventh after three rounds in the 2020 US PGA Championship, and it looks everything is pointing towards: this is THE time!

Another thing to consider is that lots of Masters winners have either grown up or gone to college in the southeast, and that also fits Berger, a Floridian who went to FSU, together with four times major winner Brooks Koepka.

Despite his 151st in SG: Around The Green, his Approach and Putting are great, and he was in the top 12 at the Sony Open, Pebble Beach and Players Championship for this metric. He was tied ninth at Sawgrass, and we confident that Berger looks a great bet at this massive price.

Kuchar (Each-Way) To Win

Each way: Matt Kuchar

If you are looking for a juicy outsider for an each-way bet, you cannot ignore resurgent Matt Kuchar. He missed the cut in November, but at the time, he was struggling with his game. Going backwards, we can see that he finished 12th in 2019, 4th in 2017 and had records of third, eighth and fifth from 2012 to 2014.

So his curriculum here is impressive, and the reason why we believe there is value on his price is because he has had a sudden upturn in form. After a period in which he has alternated midfield finishes and missed cuts, Kuchar was back at the WGC Dell Match Play, in which he finished third. After that, he said that he is a lot more excited about his game and felt like he has turned the corner. He followed that performance at the Valero Texas Open, where he opened with three 70s and was sixth after 54 holes. Surely if you look at his season-long stats, you won’t be impressed, but if you focus on the last couple of weeks, you can see a trend building up there.

Another exciting thing about him is that he finished fourth at the 2017 Scottish Open a week before coming close to winning the Open Championship. So, when he builds up momentum before a major is a sign he can deliver there. If we look before 2020, Kuchar had at least one top 10 in a major in seven of the previous eight years. You might argue he will be tired after the WGC Match Play and Valero, but before that, he only played two competitive events in March and even before that, his schedule was very light. Expecting him to win is a big ask, but he has the pedigree of being a contender, perfect for an each-way punt.
