Steve Ryder has three big priced selections for the racing on Tuesday 15th August. P&L -1.61pts
4:15 Ffos Las- Stander 10/1 (1pt)
As highlighted in a previous article, John McConnell is worth following when he sends a horse over from Ireland for a UK handicap. McConnell has had particular success in flat handicaps in the UK with 4 winners from 9 runners this season at smaller courses such as Ayr and Ffos Las. In the previous five seasons in the UK, he has had 36 flat runners with 9 winners with a further 11 placing giving him an impressive strike rate of 20/36 runners finishing in the Top 3. He sends over Stander for his handicap debut off a mark of 50 which may well underestimate him. He has been tenderly handled in his runs in Irish maidens so far at prices of 33/1, 50/1 and 100/1 over trips of 6f and 7f. He steps up significantly in trip to 1m4f for this race, so with his low mark and his trainers fantastic record in the UK 10/1 seems a generous price.
7:10 Chemlsford- Sutter County 25/1 (1pt)
A really competitive valuable handicap at Chelmsford and a chance is taken on Sutter County at a big price. He made a big impression early on in his career before suffering an injury to end his 2 year old career. Since then he has been competing in strong handicaps and listed races running to RPR ratings of above 100. He won a 7f handicap at Goodwood in May off a mark of 103 and was raised to a mark of 108 as a result. After a couple of disappointing runs since, albeit it at Royal Ascot and at Newmarket’s July Festival, he has been dropped back down to a winnable mark of 105. At Chelmsford it is a huge benefit to race prominently and to have a low draw. Sutter County is drawn in Stall 4 and I am confident that James Doyle will use this to either lead the field or at least sit in the first 3. The horses at the top of the market all have wide draws to overcome so I think it is worth taking a chance on Sutter County at a big price with conditions in his favour.
7:40 Chemsford- Sign Of The Kodiac 16/1 (1pt ew)
Another competitive valuable handicap at Chelmsford and a lot of the same factors are used to tip Sign Of The Kodiac in this race. Sign Of The Kodiac has a superb record at Chelmsford with form figures of 112 from only three runs at the venue. He was ‘with leader’ in the first of these, ‘made all’ in the second, and ‘chased winner’ on his last run. Sign Of The Kodiac is drawn 4 in this race which gives him another superb opportunity to try to dictate from the front. He was beaten last time by Mazzini but that rival is drawn wide in 7 in this race so won’t be able to get an easy lead again. Mazzini was an impressive winner but was wearing first time cheekpieces that day and has been raised 10lb for that success. From a better draw and with a swing in the weights I think Sign Of The Kodiac can reverse the form with Mazzini and at 8 times the price he is worth chancing.
