Main Bet: Harris English

After plenty of drama at Torrey Pines, the PGA Toru is back with a gentler test at TPS River Highlands. Designed by Pete Dye this course has been far from a pushover in the last years. Dustin Johnson won this tournament in 2020 we have a fascinating field, which includes the likes of the defending champion.

Our main tip for this tournament is Harris English, who is coming on the back of a third position at the US Open. He is also the current World No. 19, and the price on his seems generous, also considering that he is a course specialist.

Looking back, we can see that Reavie won this tournament after finishing third in the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach, and we are hoping to see the same path this time around. Going from poa annua to poa annua has probably helped Reavie. Pebble, Torrey Pines and this week’s course, TPC River Highlands, all use the same grass, and English ranked 15th for Strokes Gained: Putting in the US Open, so should perform strongly here as well.

His strong performance in California confirmed his good recent form. He also secured a tied 13th in the Byron Nelson Championship in May and a tied 14th in the Palmetto Championship. The US Open was clear proof that things are working out well for him, and his price looks very attractive considering that he also had a decent recent run here, as he was tied seventh in 2014 and top 25 in 2015. In 2019, he did miss the cut, but his performance included a Friday 66. We are backing the Sentry Tournament of Champions winner to secure a second title this season.

Each Way Bet: Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter looks an intriguing each-way punt for this week. He has finished third in the Charles Schwab Challenge at the end of May, showing that he is in good form and that he can perform well after a major. That tournament came immediately after the PGA Championship like this one is coming after the US Open. Poulter finished tied 30th at Kiawah Island and also tied 25th in the Palmetto Championship. At Torrey Pines he also played well before slipping to tied 40th. So, all considered, the Englishman is playing some consistent golf, and this is a place where he has done well in the past. He has played this event three times from 2011 and 2013, with a tied 24th on debut, and making all the cuts. He was back last year when he also made the cut despite was just the third event after golf was stopped. His putter is hot at the moment as he has been in the top 12 for SG: Putting in three of the last four events, and he is also ranking 8th in SG: Putting this season and 18th for SG: Around The Green.

In addition to this, he also has a decent form on Pete Dye tracks: he finished two-time runner-up at Sawgrass and has recorded four top 15s in his last five appearances at Harbour Town and a third on Dye’s Kiawah Island in the PGA in 2012. Surely there is great value in the price for him to be in contention here, and it is our each-way punt for this week.
