Following a few disappointing performances yesterday, Steve Ryder previews four races on Sunday 19th August including a 5pt win bet and huge 33/1 selection. P&L -9.98pts.
2:10 Curragh- Theobald 11/8 (5pt) *price when posted on twitter
Theobald was very impressive in his debut maiden win before two placed efforts in Group 3s on his next two starts. The form of both of those races look strong with Actress finishing a close 3rd in the Group 1 Phoenix stakes after and The Pentagon, who beat him last time, is now antepost favourite for the Derby. Those races look a lot stronger than this Group 2 Futurity Stakes and Theobald is rated at least 6lb clear of rivals in this race. Jim Bolger trained Strike For Freedom who finished a length behind Camelback (2nd fav) and a neck ahead of Rostropovich (3rd fav) last time so he should have an idea of collateral form from home work. It seems clear that Theobald is his star 2 year old for the season and he rates a confident bet to win this Group 2 before tackling a Group 1 later in the season.
4:35 Pontefract- Eagle Creek 7/4 (4pt)
I tipped Eagle Creek for a handicap at Ripon on Monday but he was a non runner on that morning but he is a recommended bet again today. Eagle Creek was impressive when winning his maiden on his reappearance this season by 6 lengths at Lingfield. He was then really well backed when disappointing in a hot handicap on 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket. He took a keen hold early before becoming unbalanced in the dip and appeared not to handle the track. He came back from that run with a laceration on his left hind leg and as a result missed the remainder of the season. Back on a more conventional track today should give him the opportunity to fulfil the promise of his reappearance. Eagle Creek has to give chunks of weight to all of his rivals in this race but if he is to prove a Group level performer he will need to be winning this off a mark of 95. Hopefully the gelding operation and time off has given him chance to progress and his opening mark of 95 will underestimate him.
4:40 Tramore- Presenting Julio 9/2 (2pt)
Presenting Julio has improved greatly since being transferred from Liam Lennon to Gordon Elliott. His hurdles handicap mark has gone up from 84 to a mark of 115 but his chasing handicap mark is 98. He had three runs over fences for Gordon Elliott finishing 3rd, 1st and 4th before reverting to hurdles so he has proved that he is well capable of running well over fences. It is Jack Kennedy’s first ride back since breaking his leg so I am sure Gordon Elliott will have plotted him back on a horse with a big chance of winning. Off a mark 17lb lower than over hurdles, Presenting Julio is a confident selection in this handicap chase.
5:30 Curragh- Voyageofdiscovery 33/1 (1pt ew)
Voyageofdiscovery is very well handicapped on previous form and will win at a big price soon. He has been rated as high as 83 in the past but runs in this race off a mark of 57. He ran well last time over C&D when not getting the clearest of runs and finishing best of all to finish 9th. He is drawn well again in Stall 19 and I think it is significant that Wayne Lordan keeps the ride from last time. He was well backed last time so I am clearly not alone in thinking he is ‘well in’ and a chance is taken again on him at a huge price.
