Stayers’ Hurdle Betting Preview & Tips

Day 3 – Thursday 12th March 2020 – 3.30pm – Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle – Grade 1 – 3m

The Stayers Hurdle is the third Championship race of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival. It is a three mile contest that has produced top winners in recent years like Baracouda, Inglis Drever and, of course, four-time winner Big Bucks.

Penhill was the winner of this race in 2018 but didn’t make it in 2019 due to injury. He has since returned to action this season, but it doesn’t look at the same level. 2019 winner Paisley Park has, therefore, a fantastic chance to land this race for the second year running. It is rather usual to have horses winning this race multiple times so it won’t be a huge surprise.

Summerville Boy will try to avoid this happening. He still needs to find a little in terms of stamina, but did well in the Cleeve Hurdle and could be a protagonist if conditions are going on his favour.

We believe PAISLEY PARK is the one to back here. Differently from what many believe, he might not have peaked yet, even after winning 7 consecutive times. We believe the staying champion still has what it takes to defend his crown in a race that has seen lots of multiple winners. Summerville Boy looks the main threat even if he has to find some stamina while City Island looks the best Irish challenger.

Our Verdict: Paisley Park

Stayers’ Hurdle History

The Stayers’ Hurdle is the most important long-distance hurdle event in the national hunt calendar. It is also the feature race of the third day of the Cheltenham Festival. The first time this race was established was in 1972 and at the time the name was the Spa Hurdle. Since 2005 it has been given the current title and it is now firmly the feature race of the Thursday of the Cheltenham Festival (while before it was run either on Tuesday or Wednesday).

The race is over a distance of 3 miles and 12 hurdles has to be negotiated. Horses who are four and older can take part with the prize pot that is £260,000. This race has been won by true legends of the sport and recently by the likes of Inglis Driver and Big Buck’s. It is Inglis Driver who has won this race more times with three wins in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Big Buck’s has won in 2009 and 2010. Howard Johnson who trained Inglis Driver is also the trainer with most wins tied with Fulke Walwyn. Ruby Walsh is the leading jockey with two wins.
