Main Bet: Ewen Ferguson To Win

As the DP World Tour returns to Europe, it heads north for the second Soudal Open and a fourth visit to the unique composite course at Rinkven International. The par-71, 6,970-yard course features only three par-3s and two par-5s, making for an abundance of par-4s.

A Strategy-Focused Course

Six of the par-4s are shorter than 400 yards, with two more spanning 406 and 407 yards. Despite the short distances, golfers shouldn’t assume they can easily overpower the course from the tee box. Rinkven International is tree-lined and demands a conservative approach, with most players aiming for similar areas. Small greens further emphasise the importance of approach play.

Past Winners and Key Stats

Last year’s winner, Sam Horsfield, excelled in approach play, leading the Strokes Gained Approach (SGA) rankings for the 2021 season. The players who finished second and third, Ryan Fox and Yannick Paul, ranked fourth and 12th in SGA last year, respectively. The first winner at this level at Rinkven, Adrian Otaegui, consistently ranks high in SGA, as did the runner-up that year, Benjamin Hebert. Guido Migliozzi, the 2019 winner, hasn’t always shone in approach play but performed well in that aspect ahead of his victory.

Local Favorites

The event benefits from the presence of Thomas Detry, returning from the PGA Tour to lend some local appeal. However, Thomas Pieters and defending champion Horsfield are now on the LIV circuit, leaving the field more open.

Ferguson is the value

American golfer John Catlin was a strong contender, given his victories at tree-lined tracks Valderrama and Galgorm Castle, as well as Diamond Country Club. However, his recent form may not be up to par. Instead, Ewen Ferguson receives the nod, despite missing the cut in his last event. The Scotsman’s first start since March, he had previously achieved two top-four finishes in South Africa, where his approach play was outstanding.

Ferguson, a Galgorm Castle winner, almost claimed his first victory at Muthaiga, another tree-lined course. The 26-year-old has also played well at Adamstal, Dar es Salam, and Galgorm Castle on the second tier. In 2019, he participated in the top-level event at Rinkven and finished third. Ferguson noted that he hit many fairways, enjoyed the course, and went bogey-free in his third/fourth-place playoff (over nine holes).

With two wins last year and two top-four finishes in his last three starts, as well as a top-three finish on the course, Ferguson’s odds of 40/1 present an intriguing opportunity for this week event.
