Main Bet: Robert MacIntyre To Win

It’s been a feast of birdies on the PGA Tour in recent times, with winning scores hitting a remarkable -23 at the Travelers, -24 at the Rocket Mortgage and -21 at the John Deere Classic. However, golfing aficionados are now eagerly anticipating a change in tempo as the PGA Tour prepares for a summer fortnight on British soil, beginning with the co-sanctioned Scottish Open.

Journey Across the Atlantic

The tournament will be held at the prestigious Renaissance Club in East Berwick, renowned for its modern links designed by acclaimed golf course architect, Tom Doak. Despite Austrian golfer Bernd Wiesberger’s stunning 22-under victory at the inaugural tournament in 2019, the past years have seen 11-under and 7-under scores claim the victory.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele, who bagged the £1.44m prize with a 7-under total last year, will return to the field. His focus, like many others, will be split between the Scottish Open title and warming up for the Open’s Claret Jug shootout at Hoylake next week.

The Role of Weather

The variance in winning scores at the Renaissance Club can be largely attributed to the unpredictable Scottish weather. Consequently, it’s crucial for both the players and the spectators to pay heed to the forecast. Current predictions for North Berwick suggest manageable wind speeds until the final round on Sunday when gusts of 20mph or more are expected.

The Importance of Strokes Gained

A cursory glance at the Strokes Gained numbers might not provide an evident pattern. Schauffele, last year’s champion, led in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green but lagged at 28th in Strokes Gained: Putting. In contrast, the remaining top seven all demonstrated impressive putting but didn’t particularly excel in other areas.

However, on closer inspection, Strokes Gained: Tee To Green has consistently been a reliable statistic with the four champions since 2019 ranking 3rd, 2nd, 4th and 1st respectively. It’s also crucial not to undermine the significance of the Around The Green aspect. The previous three champions have ranked 15th, 2nd and 8th in this category, affirming the importance of a robust short game in links-style conditions.

Betting on Local Hero Robert MacIntyre

While it’s entirely plausible for Scottie Scheffler to emerge as this week’s victor with an exceptional putting game, or for Schauffele to repeat his success from last year, there’s an interesting alternative betting opportunity in local favourite Robert MacIntyre at 90/1 odds.

Despite a disappointing 4th place finish at last week’s Made in HimmerLand in Denmark, MacIntyre appears undeterred. The Scotsman, inspired by Danish champion Rasmus Hojgaard’s victory on home soil, is likely to be fired up to perform in front of his home crowd.

MacIntyre’s record at the Renaissance Club, with a 14th and 18th place finish in two of the last three editions, suggests he’s comfortable on this course. He’s also in form, with four top 10s and two additional top 20s in his last 10 starts. His 7th rank for Strokes Gained: Tee To Green and 12th Around The Green in Denmark last week further supports his potential for success.

With solid performances in the last three Open Championships, including tied sixth and eighth finishes, MacIntyre is likely to rise to the occasion on UK soil. With the Ryder Cup’s allure serving as an additional motivation, he’s poised to make a strong challenge in the Scottish Open.

Consequently, Robert MacIntyre at 90/1 odds seems like an attractive each-way bet for this week’s Scottish Open.
