Ryanair Chase Betting Preview & Tips

Day 3 – Thursday 12th March 2020 – 2.50pm – Ryanair Chase – Grade 1 – 2m4f

Nine of the last ten winners of the Ryanair Chase had an age between seven and nine. The only exception to this rule happened in 2011 with a win from Albertas Run.

A Plus Tard is the main favourite for this race. This is not surprising as he defeated Chacun Pour Soi over 2 miles and 1 furlong at Leopardstown back in December. Due to unsuitably fast ground, we haven’t seen another race between those two, but he impressed over 2 miles and 4 furlong at last year’s Cheltenham Festival where he won the Close Brothers with a huge 16 lengths advantage. If on a good day will be a massive danger for our but he is too short in our opinion, and we have opted for a different horse, MIN.

Our Bet: MIN

Last time MIN faced Chacun Pour Soi he found it four lengths too good and that was at the Dublin Chase. That was a race he won the previous two years. He has won three of the last four over 2 miles and 4 furlongs and despite a Cheltenham Festival success has eluded him so far, he has a great course form and was also second to Altior in the 2018 Champion Chase. We believe he can set the record straight this time and edge it over A Plus Tard.

Our Verdict: Min

Ryanair Chase History

The Ryanair Chase is a relatively new Cheltenham Festival race as it was added only in 2005 when the meeting was expanded to four days. It is a race for horses who are aged five and more, and it is run over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. Horses have to negotiate a total of 17 fences.

The prize pot available is impressive as it amounts to around £250,000. It is therefore not surprising to see that in recent years there have been some talented winners. The legendary duo Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls have produced some great performances in this race. They won in 2005 with Thisandtheother and repeated themselves in 2007 with Taranis. Trainers Nicky Henderson and Nigel Twiston-Davies have also had one win each and show the quality of the horses on show in the Ryanair Chase.
