Yesterday was pretty good wasn’t it! Well for me anyway. EVERY tip won and I banked a lovely bit of money. Enough about me! It’s Royal Ascot day and I’ve got my selections on a very exciting opening day. Keep an eye on my Twitter @JamesStevens180 as I will be reporting live from the racecourse.
2:30 – Queen Anne Stakes
Ribchester was mightily impressive in the Lockinge last month and on that basis will take all the beating in the opener at the Royal Meeting. The four-year-old won the Jersey at this meeting last year, before running well in the Sussex Stakes and winning at the top level in France. He established himself as a class act chasing home the brilliant Minding in the Queen Elizabeth II stakes, before finishing a length off adding further Group One success in Dubai. He powered clear at Newbury looking like a different class to the rest of the field. If he can build on that effort, he should win.
Mutakayyef may be worth the each-way gamble in the race. He won the Summer Mile here last summer, and wasn’t too far away from Tepin in an American Grade One contest in September. He hasn’t been seen since finishing a creditable fifth in Meydan and off a break could be earning some valuable place money.
3:05 – Coventry Stakes
I was really impressed by Denaar on Lockinge day at Newbury. He picked up well and got the job in both a classy and mature manner, I do think the softer ground went against him though. Connections must be excited by him, he’s got the experience and should run a huge a massive race.
US Navy Flag arguably is the best bred in the field, but hasn’t shown his true potential in his three visits to the racecourse. He was last seen finishing third in a listed contest at the Curragh and can improve from that effort for Aidan O’Brien.
3:40 – King’s Stand Stakes
Lady Aurelia was one of the best Royal Ascot two-year-old winners in the meeting’s rich history. She powered clear to win by seven lengths that day, in truly sensational style. Wesley Ward’s filly went on to win a Group One prize, before losing at Newmarket. She won a listed race comfortably last time out, and can be good enough to power clear once again.
Washington DC can pick up some valuable each-way prize money for legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien. He was only narrowly denied against fancy Marsha in Newmarket’s Palace House and can improve from that effort. He was below par in the Temple Stakes, but deserves to have a chance in this. He won the Windsor Castle over this course and distance, and can run a big race.
4:20 – St James’ Palace Stakes
This looks to be a great battle between Churchill and Barney Roy, and what an event it promises to be. The pair clashed in the 2000 Guineas with Churchill triumphing, but Barney Roy wasn’t given the clearest of runs that day. I think Barney Roy can turn the tables today. He will be better suited to the flatter track and has had a longer absence than his Irish rival. It will be exciting, and the strongest bet looks the reverse forecast.
5:00 – Ascot Stakes
Beyond Conceit represents reigning champion jumps trainer Nicky Henderson. He posted good form on the flat winning on quick ground. He came back from injury to run good races over hurdles, and was last seen just touched off in a Grade One contest at Aintree. He looks in good order and can run a good race.
Yorkidding is a huge price for Mark Johnston, the popular stayer got off the mark last time out at Haydock and should go well only a 1lb higher. He will relish the quick conditions, and should stay the trip. He’s a consistent type and certainly has proven quality at this level, he should make the frame.
5:15 – Windsor Castle
Declarationofpeace was absolutely sensational when breaking his maiden at Dundalk last time out. The star two-year-old powered clear by six lengths for Aidan O’Brien, looking like a true classy individual. The horse that finished second that day, Treasuring, has since gone on to win at maiden level.
Charlie Appleby’s Sound And Silence can put a disappointing Sandown effort behind him. He won very convincingly on debut for Godolphin, beating some nice prospects at Newmarket. In a listed contest he finished fourth, but he should be better than that.
