James Stevens is back with his selections on day four of Royal Ascot. He closed the meeting off with a 7-1 winner!
2:30 Albany Stakes – Clemmie (6/1) , Natural (12/1) ew
Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien won the opener yesterday and they can enjoy further success with Clemmie. This beautifully bred filly enjoyed a decent debut when third, but should come on a lot for that run.
Natural was a very impressive winner on debut at Doncaster and can go well now upped in grade for Richard Hannon. She powered clear in convincing style, indicating she has the quality to contest this sort of race. She has a great pedigree and should go well.
3:05 King Edward VII Stakes – Sir John Lavery (6/1), Best Of Days (11/1) ew
I really liked Aidan O’Brien’s Sir John Lavery for the Derby but he struggled at Lingfield and missed the big race. Prior to his disapointing trial effort he had won convincingly in a maiden contest at Gowran Park and deserves his place in this field.
Best Of Days makes a reappearence, and coming back from a break is a big test. However I do think his class can show at Ascot. He won the Group Two Royal Lodge on his last start as a two-year-old and should win even more big races. He will like the conditions, and comes into it very fresh.
3:40 Commonwealth Cup – Caravaggio (Evs), Bound For Nowhere* without fav (11/2)
What a race this promises to be! Caravaggio is a truly outstanding horse, and I’m expecting him to fully show that. He won so impressively on return showing a deadly turn of foot. If he runs his race and handles the condition, the occasion, and everything that goes into racing he should win. There is an if, but from his last runs he really is a class act.
Bound For Nowhere has looked a nice sprinter for Wesley Ward, and has crept under the radar. He’s won his last two starts in good style and deserves his place in this Group One contest. He should be able to run on at the end.
4:20 Coronation Stakes – Winter (8/15)
I think the same about Winter in the Coronation Stakes as I do with Caravaggio. She is the best horse, she is a class act and takes all the beating. She needs to handle the occasion and run her race, if she brings her best she should be way too good for this field.
5:00 Queen’s Vase – Belgravia (11/2) , Count Octave ew (10/1)
Yet another Aidan O’Brien colt I like is Belgravia. He looked to be going well in Ireland when fourth in a listed contest, but he faced traffic problems in running and should be better from that effort. He’s got very good breeding, being a brother to the brilliant Derby winner Ruler Of The World. He’s got the pedigree but has to find more.
Count Octave is a lightly-raced colt who should really show his class over this extended trip. He didn’t run too badly in a competitive Chester Vase when fifth but needed the longer trip. He gets that today, and he should handle the ground too. He’s capable of placing.
5:35 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes – Mainstream (11/2) , Appeared ew (13/2)
Mainstream is a horse that has been desperately unlucky on previous efforts, and can finally strike after a number of placed efforts. He was last seen running very well behind eventual Group One second Frontiersman. He’s on a nice mark, will like the conditions and has been in good form. That form looks very strong, and he can play a leading role.
Appeared could be worth an each-way investment for Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni. He ran a stormer on his seasonal reappearance and has been raised 10lb by the handicapper. That’s a fair rise and he is still handy of this mark, he should still be good enough to run a tidy race.
