This week, all the top players will have another opportunity to prepare for the French Open, with the Rome Masters. Conditions in Rome are not as quick as in Madrid, although service points won and aces per game are still marginally higher than the ATP Tour average. It is, therefore, a medium-paced clay event.

Considering what said, it is not surprising that Rafa Nadal has a significantly better record here than Madrid. The King of Clay has won 10 titles in the Italian capital, three of the last four, including the previous edition. Novak Djokovic is the favourite this week, but it makes little sense to back him at this price.

Both Djokovic and Nadal are in the same part of the draw, and they will likely face each other in the semi-finals. However, considering that the Serb hasn’t been at his best in recent times and that Nadal has an excellent record here, it makes sense to back the Spaniard to prevail.

Expanding our look at the bottom half of the draw, we see that only 2017 winner Alexander Zverev has made the final here. However, Stefanos Tsitsipas also have chances considering that Madrid’s winner Carlos Alcarez has withdrawn to avoid too much fatigue ahead of the French Open. Some capable unseeded players like Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie and Dominic Thiem are also expected to do well, however, it is difficult to see them stopping Nadal in these conditions.

Thiem’s record in Rome has been rather flat, with three defeats in the last four matches and only one semi-final in 2017. Since returning from injury, his form has been shaky, and we believe Nadal looks the best value to secure another title here and get a boost in confidence ahead of the French Open.
