Main Bet: Tony Finau To Win

The Rocket Mortgage Classic has taken over the slot previously occupied by the Quicken Loans National, marking the first PGA Tour event held exclusively within Detroit’s city limits. Detroit Golf Club, an iconic creation of Donald Ross, serves as the host course. Though its traditional design might somewhat buckle under the modern golfing trends, it still promises an enjoyable spectacle of the sport, buoyed by the fantastic fan attendance and vibrant energy.

Despite being a somewhat quieter stop on the busy PGA Tour schedule, this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic has managed to attract its most impressive line-up yet. The tournament will feature 14 of the top 40 players listed in the Official World Golf Rankings. Title defender Tony Finau will be accompanied by notable names such as Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Tom Kim, Hideki Matsuyama, and the recent Travelers Championship winner, Keegan Bradley. It’s heartening to see a stronger field honoring this event, amplifying the thrill of the upcoming competition.

Appreciating the Classic Design of Detroit Golf Club

Established in 1916 by renowned architect Donald Ross, Detroit Golf Club beautifully encapsulates the classical, tree-lined, Bent-grass course style. While the course spans a solid 7,370 yards, it plays considerably shorter due to the longer-than-average driving distance. The hot and humid conditions further aid the ball’s flight, which prompts players to freely bomb their drivers on almost every hole. Detroit Golf Club lacks imposing hazards, making it a rather straightforward course where players can focus on driving and putting.

With the past three championships bagged by long-hitters like Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Davis, and Tony Finau, it’s clear that power plays a significant role on this course. However, that’s not to undermine the importance of accurate wedge play and proficient putting. Nearly 40.1% of strokes gained at Detroit Golf Club are attributed to putting, transforming this event into somewhat of a ‘putting contest’. As a result, players who demonstrate exceptional performance within 125 yards and can consistently convert birdie opportunities will have an edge.

The Return of the Champion, Tony Finau

Interestingly, the defending champion Tony Finau seems to be sailing under the radar this week, largely due to concerns about his recent form. Although Finau, a six-time PGA Tour winner, has not managed to secure a top 20 finish in his last five starts since winning the Mexico Open, his ball-striking abilities remain consistent. He finished 45th in the Travelers Championship, demonstrating proficiency in both ball-striking categories, and gained over three strokes off the tee.

Given his proven compatibility with the course and his arguably better form compared to last year, Finau’s prospects are brighter than they appear. The enhancement in his approach play this season and his ranking as the number two iron player in this field (behind only Collin Morikawa) support this claim. Moreover, he ranks second in opportunities gained, third in birdies or better gained, first in par five scoring, and first in easy scoring conditions.

In summary, despite a recent slump, Finau’s skills remain sharp, and his ability to outperform his competition remains undiminished. The Rocket Mortgage Classic might just provide the perfect stage for this elite talent to demonstrate that his performance exceeds what his recent results suggest.
