When I first approached this game to write this preview, the first thing I did was look at the Premier League table, as I normally do to refresh my knowledge on the positions of these two teams. I saw immediately that Nottingham Forest are currently only two points above the relegation zone, which doesn’t bode well for facing a Newcastle side that is fighting for a top-four finish this season.
When I started to dig a bit deeper into the analysis, I could see that, in fact, 77% of Forest’s points have been made at home and that Steve Cooper’s side haven’t conceded a single defeat at The City Ground since September. That clearly changes the whole perspective of what we should expect from this match.

Selection 1: Nottingham Forest/Draw Double Chance
Regardless of how it ends, this will be remembered as a very positive campaign for the Magpies. They have made huge improvements in a short time and are currently four points behind Tottenham in fourth place, but have two games in hand over the Spurs. Despite that, it is clear that they are ‘running out of fuel’. Yes, their 2-1 home win over Wolves ended a five-game winless run, but Eddie Howe’s men are very vulnerable on the road, as they have failed to win any of their last four away fixtures and have only netted a single goal in the period.
Nottingham Forest have been able to take points from the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City, so the real value bet for tonight is to back Steve Cooper’s men to continue their run and get another precious result in their relegation fight by beating an out of form Newcastle side.
Selection 2: Fabian Schar to be Shown a Card
With a lot on the line for both teams, we can expect a fierce affair with several fouls. If we continue to follow our script for this game, which tells us that Newcastle are going to struggle, it makes sense to select a Magpies defender to pick up a card. Forest will play with Emmanuel Dennis and Andre Ayew upfront, which should cause issues for the visitors’ backline, especially in counterattacks.
Suisse central defender Fabian Schär looks like the obvious candidate in Paul Tierney’s book. This season, he has played 23 games and has been booked already four times, with an average of 1.2 tackles per game. Paul Tierney has an average of 3.42 yellow cards per game, which is pretty high, and with Newcastle struggling on the road, Schär might have to spend some fouls to keep the hosts under control.
Selection 3: Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis to Score Anytime
So we said we do expect Nottingham Forest to win. The next question is: who is going to score the goal or the goals that will bring the three crucial points to the hosts? My suggestion would be to go for Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis. It is fair to say that the Nigerian hasn’t had a great season so far, having scored just 1 goal in the 13 games played for the Forest this season. Despite that, I believe he deserves some credit and that goals might just be about to come for him.
Let’s not forget that last season he netted 10 goals for Watford in what was a dreadful campaign for them, and that despite scoring only once, he has created goal opportunities and an expected goals (xG) of 1.03, with 0.9 shots per match on average. To ensure he can play more minutes, he needs to show Cooper that he is in good form, and tonight is a huge chance to do so in prime time.
