Main Bet: Ewen Ferguson To Win

A Glance at the Green Eagle GC: Third Time’s the Charm?

As the excitement builds for this week’s Porsche European Open, golf enthusiasts’ attention is drawn to the Green Eagle Golf Course (GC) near Hamburg, a layout that has consistently favoured winners who have a track record of success on modern courses in China.

The Curious Connection: The Far East and Hamburg

At first blush, the link between the Far East and a golf course near Hamburg might seem far-fetched. Yet the common thread lies in the design philosophy adopted for these golf courses. Like their Chinese counterparts, Green Eagle GC was designed with modern sensibilities on a terrain that wasn’t naturally ideal for a golf course.

Both Chinese courses and Green Eagle underwent substantial manipulation of soil and terrain, featuring a modern design that accommodates the needs of a golf tournament, complete with length and plenty of water hazards. These similarities make for an intriguing pattern worth investigating, especially as we look ahead to this year’s European Open.

Three DP World Tour winners at Green Eagle, namely Paul Casey, Richard McEvoy, and Jordan Smith, have all had significant successes in China. Andreas Harto, who won when the course hosted the Challenge Tour, has also performed well in China.

The Challenge of Green Eagle GC

Green Eagle GC is a formidable course that can be stretched out to 7,603 yards, despite having five par-3s. It features five par-5s, the shortest of which is 594 yards and the longest 705. With just eight par-4s, five of which exceed 460 yards, this course is sure to test every golfer’s mettle.

The Main Bet: Ewen Ferguson

When it comes to betting, Ewen Ferguson emerges as a promising choice. The selection was a toss-up between two young Scots, Grant Forrest and Ferguson. Despite Forrest’s impressive performance, with five top-20 finishes in his last seven starts and two runner-up spots in China, Ferguson edges him out.

Ferguson’s recent record boasts a streak of strong performances, including three top-eight finishes in his last five starts. While his record in China may not be as illustrious as Forrest’s, it shows consistent performance with strong finishes at Foshan and Hainan.

Perhaps the most convincing argument for Ferguson is his two wins at this level compared to Forrest’s one, coupled with a higher price. He showed impressive form last year, with a win in Qatar and Northern Ireland, a fine second in Denmark, and a significant lead in Kenya. Given his performance and the field this year, betting on Ewen Ferguson each way at 40/1 seems like a sound choice.
