The Zurich Classic of New Orleans: A Historic Team Event Attracts Top Golf Talent
A Rich History
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans has a long history that dates back to 1938, with the PGA Tour stopping annually since 1958, with the only exception being the 2020 edition. There have been iconic champions here like Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, and others. The tournament has recently been revitalised with a new format that has shifted from individual stroke play to a team event in 2017. This change has attracted a stronger field and more top winners.
Top Golfers Join the Fray
This week’s defending champions, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, will face strong opponents, which also include Collin Morikawa and Max Homa. The Frizpatrick brothers also need to be considered, and the same can be said for the Ryder Cup captains, who will play alongside their vice captains. The Zurich Classic should provide, once again, a fun and relaxed atmosphere with lots of pros competing.
Tournament Format
The 72-hole stroke play tournament comprises four-ball (best ball) rounds on the first and third days and foursomes (alternate shot) on the second and fourth days. The field consists of 80 teams (160 players), with the top 33 teams and ties after 36 holes qualifying for the next stage.
Venue: TPC Louisiana, Avondale
The 7,425-yard, par-72 TPC Louisiana course in Avondale is hosting the competition. The course opened in 2005 but was briefly relocated to English Turn in 2006 due to the issues caused by Hurricane Katrina. Since 2007, TPC Louisiana has hosted the event every year.
Course Details
Designed by Pete Dye, TPC Louisiana is built on 250 acres of former swamp land and features Bermuda grass. The course features 71 bunkers and 20 acres of sand, and there are water features on eight holes. The average-sized greens usually run at around 12 on the stimpmeter. Although an easy course for pros, players should deliver low scores, especially if rain will be present.
Key Strategies
Players who have done well at other Pete Dye courses tend to have an edge, especially those who have won at the WGC Match Play, which is also held at the Dye-designed Austin Country Club. Looking at the history, we can see that many players have done well at both events in recent times, with six Match Play winners who have also shown top form at TPC Louisiana.
Market Leaders
Not surprisingly, defending champions Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are the strong favourites on the back of their convincing win last year and their 11th place finish in 2021. Additionally, both are coming here in great form after recording strong finishes at the RBC Heritage. Collin Morikawa and Max Homa also need to be considered, even if Homa hasn’t impressed recently after a strong start to the year. The Fitzpatrick brothers, Matt and Alex, are talented, but I am not sure they are ready to step up in a competition with a high level like this one.
Our Selection
Considering the odds and the value associated with them, my picks for this week are Billy Horschel and Sam Burns. They finished second last year and can be backed at a very interesting price. Despite Horschel’s form being a bit inconsistent, he has a strong affinity for this course, while Burns recently won the WGC Match Play. The duo should take advantage if the defending champions falter.
