Main Bet: Chris Kirk To Win
One thing that has worked in the past in this event was to look at the good form in other Texas events and also at some recent solid play in Florida. This will be the 7th time that the Austin Country Club will host this event, so I am pretty familiar with the short Pete Dye design, which is over 7,000 yards. Last year’s final was the fourth consecutive all-American clash with Scottie Scheffler, who secured the title.
The main bet for this week would be Chris Kirk, who has been impressive in Florida and has also done well in Texas. Kirk’s best moment on the Florida Swing was at the Honda Classic, when he won at the end of a play-off and ended an eight-year wait on the PGA Tour. After that success, he was only 39th at the Arnold Palmer and missed the cut at the Players, but after skipping the Valspar, we expect him to be hungry again and ready to go for another title. Kirk has also had two top-eight finishes in the Texas Open and finished in the top 15 at Colonial the last time he was in the Lone Star State.
His first task would be to win in Group 8, where he will be competing against the likes of Viktor Hovland, Si Woo Kim, and Matt Kuchar. Hovland has yet to make it to the knockout stage in two visits, and Kim has been defeated in the group stage in all five attempts here. Kuchar has a decent record here but couldn’t make a cut on the Florida Swing, so clearly not on his best form. So, clearly, this is not a very difficult group for Kirk, who should have what it takes to go for a long run here.
