West Ham vs Newcastle Bet Builder cheat sheet

Newcastle have been the surprise package of this Premier League season. Most expected a significant improvement from last year, but the reality has been better than what the board expected, with Howe’s men now fighting to secure a place for the next Champions League season.

From the cheat sheet, we can identify some of the key reasons why the Magpies are overachieving, so let’s look into these a bit more in detail below.

A solid defence can make the difference

It is not a coincidence that Newcastle have the best defence in the Premier League with just 23 goals conceded in 29 games. Since arriving at St. James Park, Eddie Howe’s mantra has been focused on ‘not conceding’ cheap goals, and this approach has paid off big time this season.

Fabian Schar: The revelation

For a team to overachieve, you always need a few players who do a lot more than expected. Surely, for Newcastle, one of these has been centre-back Fabian Schar. A particular stat that has impressed me is that he has taken a huge 40 shots this season. No other player in the Premier League has been able to do so.

Additionally, Schar is also affecting the offensive part of the game, so surely a player that has greatly contributed to the Magpies successes this season.

Joelinton: Aggressivity, maybe a bit too much

As mentioned earlier, Newcastle’s defence is the main reason why Eddie Howe’s men have been able to challenge for the top four. On areas to improve we surely find the attack, with players that have been struggling for consistency. Joelinton, a Brazilian striker, has seemed aggressive and even out of line at times.

As a result, he has been given more yellow cards than any other Premier League player.Physicality can be good sometimes, but in Joelinton’s case it is going well above the excess, making him a great candidate in the cards market.

Kieran Trippier: The Assist Man

When Kieran Trippier signed for Newcastle last season, many believed that he just wanted an easy and rewarding way to end his career. Completely wrong!

The former Atletico Madrid and Spurs player has delivered for the Magpies and in fact has the third highest number of expected assists (xA) in the league, with only De Britney and Fernandez doing better than him. Surely there is someone you might want to consider when looking at assists.

Jarrod Bowen: “Difficult to stop legally!”

Jarrod Bowen might not have scored plenty for the Hammers, but he has surely been an asset when it comes to getting free kicks with his pace and dribbling skills. He is the fifth-most fouled player in the Premier League, which shows the difficulty of defenders marking him legally!

So in summary, Newcastle have been able to overachieve in the Premier League thanks to a solid defence and key players who have all raised the bar. If they can keep the momentum, they could close the season with a top-four finish, which would be a massive achievement considering only a year ago they were fighting to avoid relegation.
