So the PGA Tour is back in the desert, and we have a top field as 22 of the world’s top 25 players are present in Arizona, at TPC Scottsdale. The main reason for this is that the prize money has been substantially increased. But let’s take a look at the best pick for this week, as I have selected Tom Kim. The Korean player has won two PGA Tour events before turning 21.
That hadn’t happened since Tiger Woods in 1996, which shows what type of player we are talking about here. Birdies are very important here, as this tournament has been won with a 17-under average in the last six years. Kim has had scores of 20-under and 24-under, respectively, in his wins in August at the Wyndham Championship and in October at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.
It is also important to note that the last win came in the desert, and in this environment he also secured a sixth place at The American Express, so surely he does enjoy this type of setup. Even if he makes his debut here, it doesn’t really concern me, as he won both the Wyndham and the Shriners at his first attempt. Also, he was first at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January for strokes gained from Tee to Green, and he was third when he won in Vegas. This is a very important metric here, so back him at this high price.
