Main Bet: Aaron Rai To Win
Sometime ago, the feeling was that playing the week before the US Masters was a decent idea. Things have changed this year, as we can see that everyone who has Green Jacket’s hopes, has decided to let down the Valero Texas Open. Is this because of Greg Norman’s design? Not at all, but it is probably due to the schedule, which has been busier than usual as we head to Augusta.
TPC San Antonio is equal to Augusta National when it comes to the basic scorecard, as it is a par-72 course that measures 7,438 yards. Also, it has lots of trees and shady run-off areas, so it is not surprising to see that Masters winners like Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott have won this tournament respectively in 2021 and 2010. But our main pick for this week is Aaron Rai.
Rai has done pretty well in his rookie season in 2022, recording 67-74-68 over his first 54 holes. He was third after the first day and seventh with a round to go, but ultimately he slipped to tied 29th. After that performance, he didn’t perform well, missing the cut in three of the following five tournaments, so surely that is an indication that this is a place where he tends to do well.
He seems to enjoy playing in Texas, and the last time he was seen in the state was in November, when he finished seventh in the Houston Open. He also secured a top-20 finish at The Players Championship, so it looks like his trend is on the up. Another aspect to consider is that Strokes Gained: Tee To Green has been a good indicator for the victory at this course, and Rai is currently ranking at a healthy 33 for Tee To Green this season and has been in the top 20 in three of the last four tournaments. Rai has won three times in the Challenge Tour and also two times in the DP World Tour and seems to be ready to move on to the next step and looks valuable this week.
