The oddsmakers may not agree with me entirely, but I’m having a hard time recalling a men’s 21st Century Grand Slam draw that has appeared as open as the 2022 US Open draw. We’ve entered tournaments so many times over the years with a clear favorite for victory, frequently the member of the “Big Four” who is in top form or, like in 2003 with Andy Roddick, who dominated the warm-up competitions.
Here, we lack both.

Two members of that illustrious quartet aren’t present: Rafael Nadal is encircled by injury concerns following his forced Wimbledon exit, Andy Murray is a waning force, and Roger Federer is still recovering from knee surgery. Novak Djokovic is also absent as he is not currently allowed to enter the country.

Where do you begin when it comes to lead-in forms?
The Masters 1000 events in Canada & Cincinnati have historically been the two major form markers. Borna Coric and Pablo Carreno Busta have won those this year.

It’s understandable if casual sports fans wonder, “Who?”
We might be headed for a victory a la Emma Raducanu and a very high odds winner. The player I prefer among the leading candidates is Nadal, but I’m still hesitant to get involved. Nadal has had success in Flushing Meadows, having won 4 of his last eight matches there. Djokovic, the king of the hardcourt, has only ever claimed this competition three times.

However, Nadal’s injuries have had an impact on his season, forcing him to take pauses after Miami and Wimbledon, where an abdominal injury forced him to retire before his scheduled semi-final due to injury. Potential backers here must be concerned about that injury, especially when backing someone at this short price. I think it is best to pass on him this time.

Instead, TAYLOR FRITZ is preferred because of his strong serve and powerful groundstrokes, which should work well in these circumstances. Even though it ultimately resulted in a close loss to Nadal, his run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals can be viewed as a significant breakthrough at this level. In Cincinnati, a tournament that also plays quickly, the American showed that he had fully recovered from a foot injury by defeating both Kyrgios & Andrey Rublev before falling to Medvedev in the round of eight.

With Botic van de Zandschulp, Ruud, and Tsitsipas as the seeds obstructing his path to the semifinals, where Medvedev might be waiting, he appears to have a respectable draw in this match. Remember that this guy won on a hardcourt in Indian Wells in March, defeating Nadal in the championship match and that in more recent times he has won 14 of his past 18 matches on the tour. I’m willing to place a little wager on him in both the outright & quarter markets because several of those over him in the market have flaws in them.
