Main Bet: Tony Finau To Win

It is pretty much common knowledge that of the 89 players teeing it up at the US Masters, only around 20 players can really go all the way and win at Augusta National. Some even restrict this number to just 20 or 5. If we look at the betting market, we can see that bookmakers believe the green jacket will be won by one of these top three: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, or Jon Rahm, with the outsider being Jordan Spieth.

I don’t agree with this point of view because Rory McIlroy has had too many bad experiences at Augusta, Scottie Scheffler isn’t likely to win because only one defending champion has finished in the top 10 since 2007, and Jon Rahm has never been closer than six strokes on Sunday, which suggests that this may not be his best course.

Surely Sheffler is a dangerous one, as he won it so clearly in 2022 and now has a record of a win, two second places, and two third places at Augusta National. But there isn’t enough value to justify his price, and a much better option is, in my opinion, Tony Finau.

Finau has a mix of power and finesse that makes him good at the Masters. This is shown by the fact that he has finished in the top five in 2019, in the top 10 in 2018 and 2021, and has never finished worse than 38th. He is a very visual and creative type of player who suits perfectly at Augusta National, and it does explain well his successes in this place.

Finau has done well in all four majors. In the 26 majors he has played, he has finished in the top five five times and in the top ten ten times. This shows that he has the ability to win a major championship.Furthermore, he was back to winning ways on the PGA Tour with three victories since the last major at St. Andrews. Finau’s newfound winning mentality makes him a strong contender for this year’s Masters, and his impressive record suggests he has the ability and temperament to compete at the highest level on this course.

There are also some stats that we cannot ignore, as he ranks 3rd for Strokes Gained; Approach this season, which is a very important stat. He is also 11th in Bogey Avoidance and 11th in Bounce Back, which showcase his strong temperament well. It is also notable the upward trend in both his putting from 15–35 feet and from 35+ feet, which are both key distances at the US Masters.

While Finau may not have the same eye-catching recent results as some other players, he has been consistently solid, finishing inside the top 25 in every event he has played in since winning the Houston Open almost five months ago, and looks like great value at this price.
