Today’s Focus Races

As we look forward to today’s exciting races, there are some key contenders that deserve attention beyond those singled out in the predictions. At Haydock, the 2.40 race features We Dare To Dream, a juvenile from David O’Meara’s yard who has shown promise on both previous starts. He finished second to Mearall, who went on to impress in Listed company, and this race could be his chance to claim victory. Meanwhile, in the 4.17 at the same track, Defence Minister will face stiff competition in a smaller field after winning at Newmarket

At Newbury, the 6.10 race features Bolo Neighs, a strong juvenile trained by Ralph Beckett, who has been unlucky to finish second in his previous races, but the step up to six furlongs could be the key to securing his first win.

Nap of the Day

Several runners stand out in Haydock’s nursery, but Maximus Alexios catches the eye after a solid run earlier this month. His fourth-place finish at this track over six furlongs last time saw him outpaced as the tempo increased, but he stayed on well in the closing stages. Running off a 1lb lower mark today and stepping back up to seven furlongs, a distance that suits him better, should give this well-bred colt a strong chance. His form has held up, with the top three from his last race all performing well since. Trainer Richard Hannon has a good record in these types of races, and Maximus Alexios is expected to put in a bold performance.

This juvenile has been knocking on the door with two impressive runner-up finishes, including one against a future Listed race competitor. His debut saw him narrowly beaten by King’s Call, who has since gone on to contest Group races. In his second start, he chased home Mearall, who finished third in a Listed race. Today’s competition looks slightly less challenging, and it’s a great opportunity for this David O’Meara-trained two-year-old to break his maiden.

Defence Minister made a successful debut at Newmarket, beating a solid field that included subsequent novice winner King’s Call. The €210,000 breeze-up purchase has shown considerable promise, and although he carries a 7lb penalty in this small field, his class should prevail. The slight weight disadvantage won’t be enough to stop him from capitalising on a field that appears to be weaker than his previous opponents. Look for him to control the pace from the start under the skilled James Doyle.

In the 6.40 race at Newbury, State Flag looks like a solid betting proposition. She recently secured her first win over this same course and distance, narrowly defeating the competition by a short head after a poor start. The form from that race has since been boosted, with the second, third, and sixth place finishers all going on to win in subsequent outings. Raised just 1lb for that victory, State Flag remains well-handicapped and looks to have plenty of room for further improvement. With a proven track record on this course, her competitive mark suggests she can follow up that recent success with another strong showing.
