Main Bet: Matt Fitzpatrick To Win
The Player Championship, also called the ‘fifth major’, is one of the most important tournaments on the PGA Golf Schedule, and it does feel like a gathering of golf’s elite. This event is hosted by the famed TPC Sawgrass, and we have seen in the past many big names winning here, though there have been lots of exceptions along the way. Surely Rahm makes sense here, but so does Matt Fitzpatrick at a significantly better price.
It is worth remembering that six of the last 10 winners of this event were already Major champions, and that Fitzpatrick is now part of that elite having won the US Open last summer. His form at Sawgrass doesn’t raise eyebrows, as he has missed the cut in three of his last six appearances and has only managed to finish inside the top 40 once. But it is also important to say that two of the missed cuts were on his first two appearances here, while in 2021 he finished in ninth place and was second at halfway after two opening 68s. So there are some signs that he can play well here, and on that occasion, it was also his fourth consecutive tournament, so fatigue was clearly an element that disturbed his game.
This time is a lot more refreshed as this is only the second consecutive event, and he looked in great form last week in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where he finished tied 14th. Fitzpatrick’s current form now looks eight to 15 in his last 10 starts in Florida, so surely promising. He also had a strong driving performance last week as he was 6th SG off the tee, so his price surely represents great value.
