Main Bet: Grant Forrest To Win

Ullna Golf and Country Club (G&CC) near Stockholm has been chosen as the new host venue for the Scandinavian Mixed tournament. The course, synonymous with the catchphrase, “Play the icon,” intrigues golf enthusiasts and professionals alike, as it presents a fascinating backstory that reaches far beyond its apparent association with co-designer Jack Nicklaus.

The Ullna G&CC Backstory

The original Ullna G&CC course was designed by the Swedish sportsman Sven Tumba. While his name may not resonate with international audiences, Tumba holds legendary status in Sweden as a multi-talented sports personality. His accolades span representing Sweden in football, becoming the national water skiing champion, and excelling as an ice hockey star before establishing himself in golf.

Tumba’s contribution to golf goes far beyond his participation in the early 1970s World Cup. He is regarded as a seminal figure in Swedish golf, significantly shaping the sport’s evolution in his homeland. His influence even transcended national boundaries, introducing Russians to golf in the 1980s and co-founding the European Open.

Ullna G&CC was Tumba’s first design. His creation was so exceptional that when Jack Nicklaus was invited to revamp it, he merely wanted to upgrade the drainage and other technical aspects. The course layout is set by the lakeside, with holes navigating through the encompassing woods or reaching out towards the water. Eight holes notably require dealing with water bodies either through aerial shots or through approaches to greens surrounded by water.

The Tournament: A Mixed Event

The tournament, as hinted by its title, is a mixed event featuring both male and female competitors. Notably, female players have made impressive showings in previous editions. Alice Hewson took third place in the inaugural event, and Linn Grant stunned the field with a nine-stroke victory in the last edition. This year, top LET performers are expected to offer strong competition.

Main Bet: Grant Forrest

Scottish golfer Grant Forrest is a notable bet at 50/1, despite a missed cut in the recent German tournament. Forrest’s 2023 form has been impressively consistent, including a T10th in Abu Dhabi, sixth in the Singapore Classic, T13th in the Thailand Classic, T11th in the Kenya Open, fourth in the ISPS Handa Championship, and eighth in the KLM Open.

The Hamburg tournament marked his first missed cut this year. However, it’s worth noting that Forrest has historically struggled with Green Eagle GC, the tournament venue. Over the last six months, he ranks 10th in the men’s field for scoring average, a noteworthy statistic that signals his potential to bounce back and continue his successful streak.
