Main Bet: Maverick McNealy
The Rocket Mortgage Classic’s recent victories by Bryson DeChambeau & Cameron Davis lead to the immediate conclusion that this is a week for heavy hitters.
So, following this straightforward strategy, Maverick McNealy is my first selection.
The 26-year-old has received high praise ever since he won the amateur world championship in 2017 and qualified for the US Open as a youngster. His ascent to the top ranks hasn’t been as rapid for some as it has been for others, but his end-of-year global ranking has nevertheless increased significantly: 662nd in 2018 and 69th in 2021.
He finished second twice here on PGA Tour last year, but the victory has yet to arrive. Despite a little stall this season, McNealy appears to be poised for another upward surge after 2 top 10 finishes in his previous four events.
Between the two, he came to the UK to finish a respectable joint 16th in the Genesis Scottish Open. He finished tied 8th at the John Deere Classic and tied nine in the Barracuda Championship.
McNealy scores 42nd in Driving Distance and 32nd in SG: Putting. The Detroit Golf Club appears to be the perfect location for him, and rather than making educated guesses, we can rely on the fact that the American tied for eighth place here in 2020 and tied for twenty-first place here in 2021.
We’re on a bentgrass/poa combination this week since McNealy remarked last week that he loved bentgrass greens. He supported such statements by placing third for SG: Putting on such grounds in 2020 and again posting encouraging results the previous year.

Each-way Bet: Cameron Champ
Why not look at the DD charts at the top if we’re searching for a big hitter?
Cameron Champ, who median drive is 319.7 yards, is there. As seen by his three PGA Tour victories (the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship, 2019 Safeway Open, and the 2021 3M Open), there is obviously more to him than just hammering it miles.
His four victories, including his triumph at the Web.com’s Utah Championship in 2018, were all achieved with scores of 15-under or better. This week, that’s the general area we’re in. Champ doesn’t win any awards for consistency, but his career trajectory demonstrates that a win may come when he starts to recover from a rough patch.
He had a stretch of four missed cuts and a WD in the previous season before getting back on track with an eleventh at the John Deere and winning the 3M Open. His previous two triumphs were after “tells,” with his Safeway Open victory coming after a 28th and the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship after a 25th.
Champ entered the Masters this year with a form of MC-MC-61-67-MC-46-MC-MC-66. He mocked that by finishing tied for 10th at Augusta National, and in his subsequent start, he rode that to a sixth place finish at the Mexico Open.
Therefore, it may be quite important that he finished tied for 16th at the 3M Open the previous week after five missed cuts.
When Champ creates these shifts in momentum, his entire performance follows. That also applies to the putter, so after six events with poor SGP scores, the flatstick (3.393) contributed to his strong performance at the 3M Open.
Champ really remarked this past week:” I’m doing a good job.” It’s also important to note that he had a 75 to start the 3M Open.
Regarding course form, Champ finished with a 66 to tie for 12th in 2020 after finishing second at this place at halfway in 2019.
He appears to be on a good track to repeat his “bounce back to form” performance once more.
