Main Bet: Sam Burns To Win

Harbour Town Golf Links, co-designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, is a flat course that is situated at sea level and has the 18th hole running parallel to the ocean. This year, this event has become one of the PGA Tour’s designated tournaments, with a prize pool that has been increased to $20 million. It is therefore not surprising to see that this year’s RBC Heritage has attracted a better type of player than usual.

This event has always been rather popular for its post-Masters atmosphere, with only a few elite players entering after the stressful week at the Masters. As a result, if we look at past winners, we can see that they have been these players who have skills that mostly match the course’s demands: careful driving, patience with grainy and small greens, tactical prowess in windy conditions.

Top players have usually been frustrated by these challenges and either didn’t attend at all or were outplayed by more strategic players. Things seem tough and are about to change, as with a higher prize pool, the big players will be more motivated to prevail here, and it is important to consider how this will affect the specialists.

My pick for this week is Sam Burns, who can currently be backed at 40/1. His performance at the Masters was particularly solid, as even if hindered by poor weather, he still managed his best performance to date, as he was sitting in sixth place after the first two rounds. Despite the fact that he was never really in contention to win, Burns is likely to be in good spirits and have a boost of confidence heading into this week’s tournament.

Burns has shown to like this event in the past, as he delivered a ninth-place finish on his debut in 2019, where he managed to stay within four strokes of the lead throughout the tournament. On that occasion, he clearly showed that he could contend at some point, having also won two-time Innisbrook made the playoff at TPC Southwind and secured top-10 finishes at PGA National, Memorial Park, Congaree, and Scottsdale. All these courses have three things in common: challenging wind, Bermuda grass, and tight fairways.

Burns has also done well at PGA West and TPC Louisiana, which have been designed by Dye and Nicklaus, and won at the WGC Dell Match Play, which is another Dye design, the Austin Country Club. Winning this tournament would be a great opportunity for Burns to make another step towards the top, also considering the current RBC Heritage increase in both prize money and player calibre.

It will be interesting to see if elite players will raise their standards to meet the challenges presented by Harbour Town Golf Links or if the specialists will continue to dominate this event. We don’t know yet, but Sam Burns is surely a solid bet to consider at this price.
