Main Bet: Tommy Fleetwood To Win

Winning the Canadian Open can be a successful launching pad to subsequent victory in the US Open. A testimonial to this statement is Matt Fitzpatrick’s astonishing triumph last year. He secured a 10th position in the Canadian Open, which played a significant role in propelling him to clinch his inaugural Major title.

This year, ten world-ranking golfers in the top 30 are seeking to emulate Fitzpatrick’s achievement. Among them, the notables include world number 3, Rory McIlroy, 8th ranked Fitzpatrick, 13th placed Sam Burns, Cameron Young at 16th, 17th ranked Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood at 23rd, and 26th ranked Shane Lowry.

Rory McIlroy, the winner of the previous two championships in 2019 and 2021, is all set for a three-peat, as the 2020 tournament was unfortunately cancelled. After the glorious victories at St George’s last year and Hamilton in 2019, McIlroy is now gearing up to tackle a third different challenge – Oakdale Country Club.

The Oakdale Country Club Challenge

Oakdale Country Club, hosting for the first time, is a tree-lined, 7,264-yard, par 72 course. The course bears a striking resemblance to last year’s championship ground, St George’s, sharing the same original designer and renovator. This parallelism could serve as a helpful hint for the contenders.

Betting on Tommy Fleetwood

While the odds favor Europeans Rory McIlroy at [9/2], Tyrrell Hatton at 10/1, and Matt Fitzpatrick at [12/1], Tommy Fleetwood is a tempting choice at [22/1].

Fleetwood has previously participated in the tournament only once, marking a sixth-place finish at Glen Abbey in 2018 with impressive scores. Though the venue has changed, there is a correlation between Oakdale Country Club and Wells Fargo’s Quail Hollow, offering a promising outlook for Fleetwood.

Fleetwood had an impressive performance last month, finishing fifth at Quail Hollow and ranking 15th on his 2021 visit. Sandwiching this achievement, Fleetwood took 15th place at the PGA Tour’s RBC event, The Heritage, and 18th in the PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

Despite missing the cut at Colonial a week later, Fleetwood consciously decided not to compete in the Memorial Tournament. This decision might work in his favour, allowing him to preserve his energy for the upcoming contest.

Fleetwood’s victory at the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge last November marked a return to his winning ways. He shot an impressive 67, sparking anticipation for his long-awaited first PGA Tour triumph.

“I feel like I’m doing a lot of good things, and I just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep doing the things that are working,” Fleetwood asserted, emphasising his determination. Ranking 10th in Strokes Gained: Total this season, 10th Tee To Green, 1st Around The Green, and 19th in Par 5 Scoring, Fleetwood is indeed a strong contender for the title.

In conclusion, Tommy Fleetwood has a strong chance to clinch his first PGA Tour success at the Canadian Open. He has been in a positive form recently, which combined with his great love for the Canadian Open, seen as a “nice event”, could see him emerge as a victorious and popular winner.
