With a meeting in Mauritius for the final four rounds of what has been, to put it mildly, an eventful year in golf, the 2022 golf season comes to an end. This time, we reach the Mont Choisy course, a brand-new track. With only 7050 yards, this par 72 seems manageable on the scorecard, but there are a few water hazards to avoid.
As usual with courses like this, the wind will determine how challenging this track plays at the shore, but it seems like a course that these golfers could easily tear through. Paspalum greens only appear sporadically throughout the year, so a nod to form on related greens is always something to take into account. Despite not having won on either of the two main circuits, Thomas Detry leads the field at roughly 5/1. He will be eager to get the monkey off his back because this is without a doubt his finest opportunity to reach the winners enclosure. He has only finished outside the top 15 once in five PGA Tour starts this year, and if he repeats any of those performances, he will be very tough to beat.
At the top of the field, there isn’t much separating him from Burmester; the South African is only as big as 13/2. Even if I think Detry is a much better deal at the price, it would take a courageous guy to weigh in on either.
Sami Valimaki was an unfortunate loser who ran into the creative Dan Bradbury in Johannesburg a few starts back. If you think back to 2020, you can see that a lot of his finest form occurred over the course of a few months. It was his best finish in a few years. Despite a lacklustre performance last week at Leopard Creek, I’m hopeful this is the beginning of it. After winning on the coast of Oman, this spot in Mauritius should be a lot better.
He seems to be better at these kinds of tests than anyone else. This is shown by the fact that he won the Vic Open after doing well in windy conditions. A trip to Mauritius a few weeks after his finest finish in a few years looks to have arrived at the perfect time. Other top 25 finishes in the last few months also include the Scottish Open and the Dunhill Links.
