Favorites to Win the 2023 Madrid Open

With Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic both absent, it is not surprising to see that defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has been made the favourite for the title at Caja Magica, which is the second Masters 1000 on clay this season. This will be a great opportunity for him to do so, as he will benefit from the absence of Nadal, who hasn’t been seen on court since January, and Djokovic, who is out due to an elbow injury.

Despite that, it is not going to be a walk in the park for the Spaniard, as there are still some strong contenders in Madrid, like, for instance, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is keen to follow up the positive tournament he had in Barcelona and get revenge against Alcaraz, who defeated him in the final.

Players to Watch at the Madrid Open

Momentum is something that has to be closely considered in clay-court tournaments. This is a peculiarity of this surface, while on hard courts we do have new winners that tend to emerge every week. Considering that, the likes of Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune are both to be considered, as they are coming off positive victories.

Rublev won his first Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo with a win over Rune in the final. Both players have been in good shape, as Rublev also did well in Banja Luka, and the same can be said for Rune in Munich. Madrid’s altitude should benefit Rublev and his ground strokes.

Dark Horses to Reach the Second Week at the Madrid Open

Another player to keep an eye on in Madrid is Taylor Fritz, who has had a very impressive start to the clay season by reaching the Monte Carlo semi-finals and also going very close to repeating that in Munich. He has a powerful game that could be very effective here and has to be considered as one of the main contenders if he can keep the same level.

Another American player to look at is Ben Shelton, even if he has limited experience on clay. Shelton has the skills to do well on the surface and has already won twice, only losing to top-performing players. He also took a set from Dimitrov in Monte Carlo and took Casper Ruud to a tiebreak set in Barcelona.

Verdict

With the absence of two major tennis stars, this tournament has opened up, and it could be a great opportunity for Stefanos Tsitsipas to get his hands on a trophy after showing great improvements in Barcelona.

Alcaraz also has great chances of winning here, but having already gone all the way in Barcelona, he might suffer a bit of fatigue, and maybe he won’t want to push him to the extreme as he continues his preparation for the Roland Garros. It is worth backing the Greek, which is available at a much better price as well.
