John Catlin To Win

Main Bet: John Catlin

The American John Catlin is this week’s first choice. Bernd Wiesberger, an Austrian who has also placed first, second, and 5th at Diamond Country Club in Vienna (making him 6-for-7 when placing in the top 15), has won the last two iterations of this competition. Now, both courses have now seen victories by Mikael Lundberg of Sweden and Marc Warren of Scotland. Dave Horsey from England placed first and second in Himmerland and second, eighth, and ninth at Diamond, respectively.

Catlin too? We picked him  when he won the Austrian Open there in 2021 after debuting in 2020 and finishing seventh.

The fact that he played this layout for the very first time in 2019 and finished T12th with an opening round of 67 and a closing score of 66 is another thing I enjoy about this course connection. He hasn’t quite reached those heights since winning three times in 13 outings either side of the New Year 2021, but he tied for fourth in the Irish Open and finished T13th in the ISPS Handa World Invitational two tournaments ago.

In the latter, he was second going into the decisive round at Galgorm Castle, and that might serve him well by reawakening memories of what it needed to triumph. It acts as a reminder that he consistently plays his best golf at courses he enjoys after his previous victories there. At this price, he looks like the perfect choice for this week.

Ewen Ferguson (Each-Way) To Win

£20 bet returns £122 (if placed) with Betvictor

Each Way Bet: Ewen Ferguson

Let’s stick with the topic and discuss how, if handled properly, coming close to winning without crossing the finish line can be advantageous.
Ewen Ferguson said back in March that he lost his cool while holding a four-shot lead after 54 holes in the Kenya Open. He admitted to The Scotsman, “I just found it incredibly difficult, with the pressure and whatnot.”

“I was too busy thinking about it to get much sleep. I couldn’t imagine I was four points ahead. But, you know something, let’s continue. I’ll make an effort to put myself in that situation so I can perhaps handle it a little better. “

He kept his word and delivered. He received another whiff four starts later and used all he had learned to win the Qatar Masters. Three starts prior, he competed in the Cazoo Open but came up short. No big deal; a week later, he claimed the ISPC Handa Invitational.

I find it remarkable that a 2-time winner this season can be backed at these odds after missing the cut last week, which isn’t the most shocking outcome after winning.

While he lacks prior course knowledge, it is not a difficult location, and he gives off a positive Danish feel. He didn’t make the cut when he made his national debut, but since then, he’s finished fifth and second (all in the second division) and led after 54 holes twice. Surely he has what it takes to be in contention and makes it a perfect each-way punt for this Danish event.
