A Stint in HimmerLand: The Unconventional DP World Tour Event
This week’s DP World Tour event has always carried an odd charm. From its nomenclature to its choice of location, there’s something undeniably peculiar about it. Previously known as the ‘Made in Denmark’, the event’s title gave off an uncanny air as if it was a part of some confused playset. This oddity persists with its current title, ‘Made in HimmerLand’, which, with its capital ‘L’, only amplifies the idiosyncrasy.
A Quirky Course Layout
Equally eccentric is the layout of the golf course. It draws comparison with Celtic Manor for the sole reason that both are erected on terrains that don’t naturally lend themselves to golf courses. The design features fairways and greens precariously clinging onto slopes, and tee shots needing to negotiate significant elevation changes. This makes the overall ambiance feel a tad unnatural, even forced.
Despite the peculiarities, the event has always been a lively affair. It exudes a festive atmosphere and has an engaging par-3 16th hole known as ‘The HimmerLand Hill’. It could be as short as 79 yards, necessitating a pitch to a sloping green. This setup is both challenging and fun: nail the correct slope and watch the ball roll towards the hole; miscalculate, and the player could be left with a demanding two-putt or chip and putt for par.
The Underdog: Ewen Ferguson
Ewen Ferguson, a promising Scottish golfer, has demonstrated his potential in the last week’s British Masters. Despite an inauspicious start, he showed resilience, bouncing back with back-to-back birdies and a 5-under in four holes during his second nine, which earned him an impressive 69 in his opening round.
Although his next 36 holes were played in level-par, Ferguson concluded with a final round of 68, featuring seven birdies. He was 8-under for the week and made a valiant effort to reach the 9-under mark, unfortunately, falling short. However, he was content with his performance, particularly his aggressive approach when in contention.
Ferguson, who finished second in Denmark last year, has also bagged two top fives in Denmark on the second tier and was a 54-hole leader on both occasions. His record over the past year has been commendable, with two victories to his name and an impressive performance last week, finishing fourth.
Considering his steady improvement, there is a sense of anticipation around his performance at the upcoming HimmerLand event. Standing at 28/1, he is certainly worth an each-way wager. His love for the game and his steely determination could very well give us an intriguing week at the unconventional HimmerLand.
