Joshua vs Franklin predictions & tips

Anthony Joshua, a former two-time unified heavyweight champion, is back in the ring on Saturday night, hoping to get his career back on track after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk, the current unified WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight title holder. Would it be a ‘New Dawn’ for AJ? Find out below what our boxing expert Herrin Kendrick is suggesting you bet on this big bout, which includes a 3/1 punt.

Anthony Joshua is back as he tries to work his way into world title contention. The first step for him would be to defeat American Jermaine Franklin in what would be AJ first bout without a world title on the line since 2016.

Joshua vs Franklin Predictions

Key Stats
– Joshua has lost the last two fights against Oleksandr Usyk
– Franklin has won over Dillian Whyte on his last fight
– Franklin has fought just twice in three years

Will It Be A New Dawn For Anthony Joshua?

So really, it won’t be a ‘New Dawn, but the more correct label for a win on Saturday should be ‘I am still around’. Jokes apart, this is a must-win for Joshua, who would then be able to plan the next step probably against the likes of Joe Joyce, Dillian Whyte, Daniel Dubois, or maybe even finally against Tyson Fury.

But let’s not look too far ahead, as Franklin cannot be underestimated after defeating Whyte in the last fight. So I expect this to be a cracking match, and below I have also provided you with the analysis and best bets for this Joshua vs Franklin clash, as well as information above on how to watch Joshua’s ‘New Dawn’ or whatever you want to call it!

There are a lot of expectations to see AJ back in action as he attempts to reclaim the heavyweight belts he had to give away two years ago. To be honest, I wouldn’t have predicted such a decline after that win in 2017 over Vladimir Klitschko, but here we are, and probably for the 33-year-old this is the last call, after going through a very difficult period in which he clearly didn’t have a proper strategy in place to succeed. Now, under new trainer Derrick James, he would have to prove that he has turned the page and is ready to deliver results rather than only headlines.

Looking around for betting opportunities, it becomes immediately apparent that backing Anthony Joshua to win at 1/10 is not something feasible. Even a win by KO/TKO/DQ at 3/10 is something that I would absolutely pass, not only because the price is very short but also because we haven’t seen Joshua for sometime and there is little to justify that short price, apart from bookmakers trying to avoid high liability when the ‘masses’ will start to flock behind AJ.

As you might have gathered from reading above, I am not a big fan of Joshua, and I don’t think he has what it takes to get back to the top. He missed the boat by trusting the wrong people, and now it is time to try and finish his career with some pride.

Joshua-vs-Franklin Stats

Despite my personal opinion, I still believe that at the O2 Arena he will prevail on Saturday night. There is too much on the line for him, and I do believe he has been preparing well for this event in the world-class training camp in Texas with former world champions Errol Spence and Jermell Charlo. After all, Joshua did look good in both the Ruiz and Usyk rematches, and a performance like that one could be enough to get a rather convincing win against a decent Franklin. The O2, after all, was the place where Joshua has very good memories after dismantling Charles Martin and Dominic Breazeale.

Like it or not, he is still a former Olympian who won all his first 20 fights by knockout in his glory days.

AJ lost to Ruiz when nobody knew who the likeable, not really that much, chubby Mexican was, so I wouldn’t go heavy on Joshua to win outright or by method but rather bet that the fight will be over under 6.5 rounds, which is available at a very generous EVS price at William Hill.

For rather larger odds, I also suggest backing Joshua to hammer Franklin within the first three rounds, which is available at William Hill at the boosted price of 3/1 at the moment of writing (was 5/2).

The American will be happy anyway, as he will pocket some very decent money, and the fact that he has fought just twice in three years makes this option pretty valuable at this price. The American did well against Dillian Whyte, but could it have just been a one-off?

He will be in a difficult environment against an AJ that is expected to start strongly and aggressively. He has the explosive punch that could end this very quickly, and this would be his main objective to regain public confidence. AJ winning by decision or just ‘edging’ Franklin won’t surely be a ‘New Dawn’. To be something like this, AJ needs to win and win well this one. Expect Joshua to go all-out on attack and, if things go his way, to end this pretty quickly.
