Entering the 51st Country

The DP World Tour enters a new era as it makes its debut in Japan this week, in what is the 51st country the tour has touched since its start in the early 1970s. Even if the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Event was also considered part of the tour, this is the first official visit in Japan as the circuit is trying to enrich the range of action.

Star-studded Field

For this event, we have a star-studded field that features many Japan Tour veterans in addition to many young talents that are keen to make the most of the huge opportunity that comes with this prestigious event.

PGM Ishioka GC: A Picturesque Setting

The tournament is hosted by PGM Ishioka Golf Club in Omitama, which is a parkland course that was designed in the early 1990s by the famous Jack Nicklaus Design Group. The course, which is nestled within the Kogama Forest, has tree-lined fairways that are a bit narrower than the usual Nicklaus courses, and that do provide a unique challenge to the players.

Challenging Greens and Signature Design

On the course, we also find large putting surfaces, greenside bunkering, and shaping that reflect the 18-time major winner’s signature style. Golfers are tested over the distance in the way they control the iron play. Despite that, the layout is not particularly long, and both the front and the back have two par-4s in the first three holes that measure less than 400 yards.

Top Contender: Ashun Wu

China’s Ashun Wu, a four-time DP World Tour champion, is one of the players to consider this week at a price of 66/1. Wu has done very well in Japan previously, having won twice before establishing himself on the DP World Tour.

Wu’s Impressive Track Record in Japan

Ashun Wu started to play in Japan’s circuit in 2010, but his first success came in 2021 with a win in the Toshin Golf Tournament and several top-10 finishes. He also finished fourth in the Japan Open. The following year, he went close to defending his title and secured another win in the Heiwa PGM Championship. Wu has continued his success in Japan, where he landed the Open in 2015.

Familiar Territory and Solid Form

Wu’s familiarity with the Ishioka course gives him a clear advantage heading into this week. On this course, he came very close to winning the Honma Tourworld Cup at Trophia Golf and should use that experience for this week. Wu has also had a very positive season so far with top finishes at the South African Open, Dubai Desert Classic, Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and the Singapore Classic.

The tight course layout should suit well the Kenya Open winner, making Ashun Wu the best candidate to secure the win as the DP World Tour begins his historic debut in Japan.
