Gran Canaria Open Betting Tips

The European Tour moves to the new venue Meloneras Gold this week as the Gran Canaria Open will take place. As usual, our golf betting experts have studied the field and come up with two predictions for this tournament: a main bet and an each-way one.

Main Bet: Garrick Higgo

Higgo has played very well at the Austrian Open and will surely enjoy the warmer climate of Meloneras Golf. This course is a very typical Iberian/island resort course with a modern design, Bermuda grass, good temperatures and potential for blustery breezes. The course was designed by Ron Kirby, who also did the Gleneagles Centenary Course.

Meloneras has three par-5s, and this is quite interesting as Higgo is currently leading this year’s scoring averages on the short holes. In addition to that, his first win in 2020 was at Serengeti, which is a modern course very similar to this one in regards to fairways and greens. A few weeks later, he recorded his first win on the European Tour at Royal Obidos in the Open de Portugal. Also, that course is a classic Iberian resort coastal track with many similarities to Meloneras. Higgo also finished third in the Cyprus Open at Aphrodite Hills, and he comes here in great form with fourth top 20 in five starts. We expected his price to be a lot shorter considering all of this, and, in our opinion, there is plenty of value in this selection.

Each Way Bet: Calum Hill

Scotsman Calum Hill’s form cannot be ignored. He is currently fourth behind Donaldson in the scoring average in the last six months, and on his last four starts, he has secured tied fourth in the Saudi International, followed by tied eight and third in the two Kenyan tournaments. If we expand our look a little more, we can see that he has had five top 15 finishes in the last seven starts, and, similarly to Higgo, we would expect his price to be a lot shorter.

It is significant his effort in the Mauritius Open in late 2019. Although the Heritage Golf Club is in the middle of the Indian Ocean, it has lots of similarity to the type, of course, he will face this week. He also finished in a top 10 at Celtic Manor, and he is currently ranking eighth for par-3 scoring this season. Everything is pointing in the right direction for this 26-year-old, which should definitely be in contention and look the best each-way punt at this high price.
