Many have been predicting for some time that the era of dominance is behind us now. Although the likes of Roger Federer and Andy Murray won’t be in Paris, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal are still leading the outright market for the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament. However, at least on clay, things are starting to change as the elite duo are joined at the top of the market by the revelation of the last year, Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz. The youngster is second in the betting market, just behind Novak Djokovic and before the King of Clay Raga Nadal, who failed to impress in Rome.

Despite Djokovic answering many doubters with a win in Roma last week, without losing a single set, it is difficult to justify such a short price, and we don’t see much value in him at all. The same can be said for Nadal, who was defeated in Italy by Denis Shapovalov, and he is now seeded fifth for the event and therefore had an unfavourable draw here.

Alvarez is a top prospect and can well be in contention, yet he lacks experience at this level and backing him at this short price makes little sense. Casper Ruud is a player with realistic chances of challenging this trio. The Norwegian has won more than 80% of his clay matches last year and has similar numbers to the players leading the betting market, despite playing with slightly lower quality opposition. Considering that Djokovic and Nadal’s form raises some questions, it makes sense to back him to cause a surprise. At this high price, you would get good value even by cashing out if he makes it to the latest stage of the tournament.
