Main Bet: Alexander Bjork To Win

As the curtains prepare to close on a journey that kicked off last September, the crème de la crème of Europe’s young talent converges atop a metaphorical mountain, all vying for a spot in the prestigious Ryder Cup. For Luke Donald, the European team captain, choosing among the bevy of talent at his disposal is a challenge he never anticipated. Come Monday, he has to make a definitive call.

While Europe certainly doesn’t share the luxury of leaving behind a two-time major winner like their competitors can, the selection dilemma is no less intriguing. Beyond the guaranteed octet, there are at least a dozen individuals whose credentials make them worthy contenders. The question in the air: could Donald possibly name one Hojgaard twin and have the other as a standby?

However, determining the team based on performance at Crans-sur-Sierre might be misleading. Known for its eccentricities, this course could easily upset a contender’s game. Moreover, the DP World Tour’s flagship event is only two weeks away, and it would indeed be anticlimactic if an unsung hero were to emerge as the victor post the Ryder Cup selection.

Donald’s strategy remains enigmatic. But if the Team Europe mantra of ‘Stick to the plan’ is anything to go by, consistency and previous commitments should ideally dictate the choices. Regardless of performance dynamics, certain players, like Nicolai Hojgaard, could be indispensable.

Key Contenders

Matt Fitzpatrick, despite his absence from the current contest, is almost guaranteed a spot due to his overall track record. Robert MacIntyre, on the other hand, has to prove his worth to secure his position. After a stellar show at the Scottish Open, MacIntyre is someone to look out for. However, the unpredictable nature of Crans might be a hurdle he needs to cross.

Talking of performance, Rasmus Hojgaard’s victory here in 2021 cannot be ignored. Yet, the dynamics have shifted, and the front-runners in this edition will need to exhibit a different arsenal of skills.

The Intricacies of Crans

The Crans golf course is an enigma. It’s not just about power but requires a strategic play. With its diminutive greens, suffocating tree cover, and dramatic slopes, it demands precise wedge play and top-notch control. Notably, the course layout favours those who excel in quality approach shots, especially with short-irons, while also capitalising on scoring opportunities.

Enter Alexander Bjork. The course, given its peculiarities, seems tailored for him. Enjoying arguably his best season, Bjork has consistently been among the top performers, but a victory has eluded him. His one perceived limitation – lack of power – may not be a setback on this course. And his impeccable history at Crans only boosts his chances.

Yannik Paul is another name to consider. His potential victory could send shockwaves through the selection process. His profile – precision in approach play and excellent scrambling stats – makes him a natural fit for Crans. Although a first-time contender here, his experience in adjusting to different altitudes might be a plus.

Dark Horses and Predictions

Among other players who could make a mark, Romain Langasque stands out with his green prowess. His aggressive playing style, paired with the consistent form he’s displayed, makes him a potential surprise package.

Another notable mention is India’s Shubhankar Sharma, priced at a tempting 125/1. With a solid performance at the Open and an affinity for tree-lined courses, he could well emerge as a dark horse in this contest.

However, considering all data points and narratives, our prediction leans towards Alexander Bjork. His exceptional course form, current form, and the alignment of Crans’ requirements with his strengths make him the probable champion of the European Masters.
