This week’s Cazoo Open will bring the DP World Tour back to Celtic Manor, and our golf experts have provided their best picks and predictions for the competition.
My attention has been sparked by how much Nacho Elvira, who won the Cazoo Open last year, and Campillo appear to have in common as golfers. In fact, the results are so absurd if you compare them to instances where Elvira finished in the top three with Campillo’s performance.
While Campillo has never participated on two of Elvira’s victories in the second tier, the third occurred at Geneve CC, where Campillo finished second in his lone start.
Three times on the DP World Tour, Elvira came in second place. At Dar es Salam (Campillo also has a second position there), Saujana (also true), and (Campillo won the title there).
Three times, Elvira came in third. Campillo placed second and fourth at Al Mouj, seventh at Milano, and eighth at Centro Nacional de Golf.
Even this year, Elvira had a 62 to tie Campillo for the first-round lead at the MyGolfLife Open, and the two of them were tied for sixth at the midway point before finishing in the top 15 at the Soudal Open at the beginning of the summer.
Campillo has the appearance of a man willing to have a pleasant week, to keep things a bit simpler.
After placing T15 in the BMW International Open a week prior, he toyed with the lead all week until finishing seventh in the Irish Open. He was also in the top 10 in both of the previous two weeks before the cut before faltering at the weekend.

Each Way Bet: Mikko Korhonen
Mikko Korhonen of Finland is playing extremely well this season but hasn’t quite found the spark to mount a push for a 3rd DP World Tour championship.
Since the end of March, he has made 10 consecutive cuts, and also recorded an 8th finish in the British Masters at The Belfry.
He was 3rd at the Ryder Cup event last year, and his performance has been very consistent. Could he repeat that feat this week?
He finished only one stroke short of the play-off and finished third in this competition, posting rounds of 66-70-67-66 to stay the entire week in the top 10.
It’s also not the first time he’s had a good time in Newport; in 2013, he finished ninth. David Law, last week’s close call selection (no victory, but full place return), had my initial preference, but I decided to go with Korhonen instead as there is better value.
