Main Bet: Taylor Pendrith To Win

For the golf aficionados among us, who revel in the intricate margins of the sport, the Barbasol Championship stands as an enthralling narrative. This co-sanctioned alternative event may seem trivial to some, but to the discerning eye, it’s a repository of drama, tension, and riveting golf.

Golf’s Unforgiving Margins: A Look Back

The 2021 edition of the tournament saw JT Poston seemingly in a dominant position. However, his tee-shot on the par-five 15th strayed by a mere foot, triggering a sequence of events that culminated in a loss to Seamus Power after a play-off. This minor misjudgement cost Poston dearly, needing a year to recoup fully, while Power rose to become a top-50 global player.

In contrast, Trey Mullinax, in 2022, had a similar experience at the same spot on the course. Yet, under the placid ambiance of a Thursday afternoon, Mullinax recalibrated magnificently. Making an eagle with his second ball, he won the tournament by a hair’s breadth, going on to excel at the Open the following week as a last-minute invitee.

Keene Trace: The Return to Kentucky

Now, as we look towards another spellbinding encounter at Kentucky’s Keene Trace, the plot is thickening around Troy Merritt. Despite admitting to suffering from the yips and reportedly set to leave for Scotland, there’s a growing gamble on this golfer. Merritt, the 2018 champion at this venue, has displayed some of his best tee-to-green performances recently, albeit coupled with subpar putting, which led him to finish 17th twice.

This scenario underlines the field’s relative weakness. Further supporting this is the position of Taylor Pendrith, who ranks 190th out of 190 players in final-round scoring. Despite this, the Canadian is pegged as a worthy favourite with tantalising odds of 16/1. It’s his powerful game, tailor-made for the par 72 course, that has garnered attention.

Pendrith’s Prodigal Power Play

Pendrith’s first appearance was as a Korn Ferry Tour player, and upon his return last year following a four-month injury hiatus, he dominated off the tee, despite evident rust in other areas. With long drives and strategic aggressive lines, he was able to turn most par-fours into opportunities, demonstrating the effectiveness of his game on this course.

This year, Pendrith enters the fray after a strong performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, no longer plagued by injuries nor a Korn Ferry Tour member. His recent progress, including a commendable tee-to-green display, has his prospects for this championship looking bright.

Norman and Cone: High Potential but High Risks

Other notable golfers include Vincent Norrman and Trevor Cone. Norrman, an exceptional driver, ranks second in greens hit in this field, showcasing his impressive ability. He has also shown promising performance on driver-heavy courses in Texas and Mexico. However, his withdrawal from the John Deere Classic last week has created uncertainties around his condition, making it difficult to back him despite strong early support.

On the other hand, Trevor Cone, a powerful player who excels in his off-the-tee strokes, presents an interesting proposition. He ranks among the top 10 in driving distance and top 15 in strokes-gained off the tee. Like last year’s champion, Mullinax, Cone’s long-hitting style is well-suited for Keene Trace.

While his form is somewhat inconsistent, Cone’s best showing was when he placed 23rd in the Nelson and 40th in the Rocket Mortgage. Like Norrman, his putter is his main concern. Nevertheless, he looks primed to capitalise on a drop in grade from the John Deere Classic, where his solid ball-striking performance was overshadowed by a missed cut.

Given the advantageous conditions at Keene Trace for long-hitters like Cone and the promising odds, he’s a bet worth considering. His potent driving and decent green performances signal a potentially strong ball-striking week ahead, providing an exciting subplot in the drama that is the Barbasol Championship. Although these two players should be considered for a small wager, my bet for this tournament is on Pendrith who should not disappoint on this course.
